3 1. Content One of the fastest growing industries today, the Life Sciences, comprise the fields of science that address issues relating to living organisms. In industry terms, this relates mainly to the fields of Pharmaceuticals, Medical Technology and Biotechnology, the focus of this module. Advancements in this industry are providing the basis to tackle major human diseases, such as cancer, neurodegeneration, cardiovascular, metabolic, infectious and inflammatory diseases, to name but a few. This industry is evolving continuously through increased understanding of biology (genetics and biochemistry) and of pathogenesis of disease, as well as through the development of new technology platforms. These changes have led to a re-configuration of the value chain of the sector with Biotechnology and Medical Technology becoming the main research engines and innovators of the Industry. Recent innovations present interesting opportunities: Increased knowledge of biochemical pathways leading to broader range of product types from small molecules to biologics Better diagnostic tools and identification of new biomarkers for better defined patient groups (even personalized medicine) and clearer understanding of disease Novel technology platforms for developing, assessing, approving and monitoring the effects / tolerability of drugs But, they have been accompanied by increasing challenges: Stricter regulatory environments with regional variance, including price regulation and cost awareness Greater public scrutiny impacting the ability to manage risk and compliance Scarcity of private funds for early stage ventures Challenges in retaining value through partnering with big Pharma / MedTech Declined R&D productivity of big Pharma As a result of this rapidly changing landscape, management is continuously faced with the need to adapt and respond to opportunities and challenges. This module is designed to give participants an overview of the industry, the key issues faced by management as well as the basic tools to address them. The participants will be given the opportunity to test out business ideas with peers and experts, a dynamic process with a concrete take-home message: from test-tube to IPO - what is the best way to get there? Lorange Institute of Business Zurich, January
