By: Michael Cannon I am sure you have heard the flight attendant say that hundreds of times. Place your mask on first, and then assist your child with theirs. Why do they tell us that? Because our instincts are to take care of our children first and worry about ourselves after they are safe. Unfortunately, that intuitive response will leave you both in greater peril. If you do not have oxygen to breathe, you will be of no help to your child. In public works, we are often called upon as first responders to emergencies caused by earthquakes, heavy storms, tsunamis, and even major traffic accidents. But can we effectively respond to such events if we have not kept ourselves physically and mentally ready? Is physical and mental fitness even on our radar as a professional responsibility? If we are faced with a challenging event, whether it is physical exertion or just the stress of handling chaos, are we ever ready? Watching our weight, keeping a regular regimen of exercise, and proper nutrition are important components to fulfilling our professional obligations. Regular exercise, at a minimum of a half hour a day, results in myriad benefits such as reduced risk of heart disease, better mental acuity, and a calmer demeanor all valuable when duty calls. Additionally, regular exercise is one of the best stress reliefs humans have. And, it is free! Some of us have joined the ranks of those who are building workouts and walks into their day as well as making proper nutrition the priority it needs to be. The communities we serve rely on us in the public works profession more than they, or we, realize. We have a professional, as well as civic responsibility, to be ready to respond when and how we are needed. However, before we can help others we must place our masks on first by keeping ourselves physically and mentally healthy. If you aren t -- you should be. It is an important part of your job.
