1 First Year Resumes No it s not early! You do need a resume as a freshmen! As a first year student you will need a résumé to apply for part-time jobs, summer jobs, scholarships, research, and potentially internships. Plus, if you have a résumé your first year at SBU, you can continually update it with your new experiences including clubs/organizations, internships, volunteer work, and employment. Furthermore, you never know when the right opportunity might present itself and you definitely want to be well prepared. Did you know? Readers spend seconds reviewing a resume to decide if the applicant is of interest. Follow these guidelines to make a strong first impression. 2 RÉSUMÉ CHECKLIST for FIRST YEAR STUDENTS The checklist is a guide for writing your résumé. Make your résumé unique by reflecting who you are and what you have to offer. Layout and Appearance One page only in length, font, used Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri, or Helvetica font, 0.5 to 1 inch margins Heading: Your name at the top of the page, largest font, and in bold. Including address, phone number, and . Format: Looks uncluttered with plenty of white space between sections; and error free. Used verb tenses in the present tense for current positions and past tense for previous jobs. 3-5 statements per job in recommended bullet format Content Contact Information is professional and appropriate Include the following headings: Education, Relevant Experience, Employment, Leadership/Activities, and Honors/Awards Education includes your official degree and expected graduation date and GPA if a 3.0 or above Relevant Experience demonstrates clearly your experience, responsibilities, and work ethic. Employment states your experience, responsibilities, and work ethic. Leadership/Activities includes associations, clubs, and/or volunteer work. Honors/Awards includes achievements, recognitions, scholarships, and awards. Skills reflect technology, language, transferable, and competencies directly related to the position you re seeking. Statements start with action verbs and include key skills and major accomplishments. 4 Action Verbs by Skills Categories Action verbs are a good way to describe transferable skills that you have developed. Transferable skills can transfer from one job or occupation to another.
