OCTOBER 2012 GEUS PERSONNEL POLICY G E U S

INTRODUCTION It is vital that GEUS mission, vision and values are supported by a clear personnel policy. GEUS vision: Geology for a changing society GEUS vision makes clear the role and the ambitions GEUS wishes to adhere to now and in the future both internally and externally. On this basis, GEUS has set out the following staff policy objectives: GEUS wishes to be a workplace offering a high level of professionalism and great creativity while ensuring results for society at large, GEUS and its employees. This is the basis of GEUS current and future personnel policy. GEUS personnel policy should be seen in the context of the GEUS management foundation (ONE GEUS). The GEUS management foundation concretises the expectations of employees to management and GEUS as a workplace as well as the expectations of management and GEUS to employees. 2

GEUS VALUES Both GEUS management foundation and personnel policy are based on GEUS values which are: Professional commitment and creativity Freedom with responsibility Cross-cutting openness and collabroation Community and mutual respect The personnel policy has been divided into sections according to these values to clarify and concretise them, but of course the GEUS personnel policy topics transcend the values. 3

PROFESSIONAL COMMITMENT AND CREATIVITY Commitment and creativity are the most important drivers for GEUS in achieving our results and in continuously meeting the challenges facing the institution. Professional pride characterises GEUS work. GEUS employees are driven by many things; making a difference, finding workable solutions, being innovative and reaching new realisations, doing a good job and feeling professional pride. In this way, all employees contribute to GEUS vision and goals. GEUS prioritises research quality, relevance and professional commitment at all levels and wishes to be a stimulating and creative workplace. GEUS recruits highly qualified, committed, creative and enterprising employees through a targeted recruitment effort both nationally and internationally. 7 FREEDOM with RESPONSIBILITY One of the most important prerequisites for retaining and recruiting committed, highly qualified and creative staff is to give employees the freedom to take responsibility and to gain influence. As far as possible, employees are involved in the development and implementation of GEUS objectives and strategies. GEUS prioritises giving all employees the highest level of freedom with responsibility within the framework of our objectives, strategies and resources. It is also vital for GEUS as a research institution to ensure that the integrity and methodology of its researchers are never compromised. At GEUS it is important that employees have and exercise influence over their work in terms of planning, methodology, execution and results. Management is confident that all employees can administer the freedom and responsibility they are given. GEUS has chosen an organisational structure with projects and coordination within our programme areas. GEUS will continue to work to develop its project structure to promote 1) the delegation of responsibility to projects and their participants, 2) cohesion between projects and GEUS objectives and strategies and 3) cross-cutting collaboration. GEUS provides the opportunity for flexible planning of work which takes into consideration employees personal and family needs, including flexible hours, part-time jobs, senior employee schemes and remote working. GEUS wishes to the widest extent possible to respect the desire of retired employees to retain an association with the institution. The framework for the policy of freedom with responsibility can be found in GEUS : strategy, performance contract and work programme project model flexitime agreement senior employee policy guidelines for senior researchers emeritus. 7

CROSS-CUTTING OPENNESS AND COLLABORATION Cross-cutting openness and collaboration are key concepts that both management and employees prioritise very highly both within and outside GEUS. One of GEUS greatest strengths is our wide-ranging professional expertise and competences in a large variety of fields. This equips us well to fulfil our mission. To use this in the best possible way, we think across disciplines at all times. GEUS project structure supports this way of thinking by requiring great collaborative skills from everyone and demanding openness, communication and the ability to make effective decisions. It is therefore important to understand and accept GEUS organisational structure and the challenges it entails. Cross-cutting openness and collaboration mean: that decisions are taken on the basis of open dialogue knowledge sharing and cross-cutting collaboration mutual inspiration and feedback readiness for change that we enjoy debate conducted in an open and unbiased atmosphere direct communication and clear statements consolidation of networks within and outside GEUS which are important both to projects and the personal development of our employees. 8

COMMUNITY AND MUTUAL RESPECT Community and mutual respect have always been important values in GEUS where ethical standards are our bedrock both in terms of personnel policy and our relationship with the outside world. Protecting these values in difficult times is vital e.g. in situations when it may be necessary to dismiss employees. This represents a challenge for everyone in GEUS. Community and mutual respect mean: respect for each other s work and professionalism respect for each other s strengths, weaknesses and differences a social attitude to people who have difficulty in retaining a connection with the labour market team spirit and unity that we have a positive and safe working environment both physically and mentally. Community and mutual respect are expressed through: intercultural awareness our working environment introduction of new employees equality. 11
