2 INTRODUCTION The Saskatchewan Association or Rural Municipalities (SARM) along with the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) have identified that the Municipalities and their employees would benefit from their Foreman receiving training in employee management and effective communication skills. A number of training opportunities will take place during annual conventions and will also be delivered at strategic locations throughout the province of Saskatchewan.

3 MUNICIPAL MANAGEMENT ESSENTIALS PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The management courses provided by the College are ideal for aspiring, new and current supervisors or managers. These programs will help learners improve their management acumen through practical, skill-oriented business courses. This training is provided through interactive workshop-style classes led by leading edge instructors who will challenge and build the learner s core business, leadership and management skills. The training is structured with three levels. Each level is comprised of a minimum of 35 credit hours. After completing each level, employees will receive a joint certificate issued from their municipal organization and the Southeast College. Modules can be taken in any order. Class size for management workshops must be limited to 25 participants due to the interactive style of the workshops. This number is adhered to in order to give the learner the best possible learning experience. In order to accommodate larger number of participants, additional instructors and classrooms will be utilized. Programs described in this brochure may be subject to change. 5 MUNICIPAL MANAGEMENT ESSENTIALS MUNICIPAL MANAGEMENT ESSENTIALS Foreman Modules SUPV 208: Supervisory Skills (14 hours) This interactive course is for the new supervisor or those about to take on a supervisory role. It explores the mindset change that is required to supervise a team, and how a supervisor s responsibilities differ from those of the front-line worker. Traits of successful supervisors are examined along with skills such as managing, not micro-managing; problem-solving; organizing the workload successfully; holding team members accountable, even if they are former peers; communicating clearly; and giving effective feedback. These skills are practiced in the course so you leave with the confidence to step into the role of an effective supervisor. Module 1: The Role of a Supervisor Module 2: Making Decisions and Solving Problems Module 3: Communication and Interpersonal Skills Module 4: Managing Performance SAFE 246: Being a Safety Leader (14 hours) This course provides an overview of safety legislative requirements, as well as how to build a safety program to ensure a safe workplace environment. You will look at safety, health and environmental issues as well as identify hazards and precautions, learn to practice good housekeeping, establish standards, and monitor and evaluate your safety program. Module 1: Benefits, Rules, and Guidelines Module 2: Hazard Assessment, Elimination and/or Control Module 3: Communications, Competency, and Codes of Practice Module 4: Emergency Response and Incident Investigation Module 5: Health, Wellness and Program Management 4

6 FOREMAN MGMT 218: Customer Relations (14 hours) As competition grows in our global marketplace, the only real defining difference between products and services is customer service. Your customers (or lost customers) base their buying decisions on the service they receive above and beyond the product or service that they are purchasing. This customer relations course takes you through the key steps in building a customer service plan that will become your competitive advantage. We will cover customer service delivery and dealing with challenging customer situations and you will develop a customer service strategy that recognizes guidelines for professional customer service standards. Module 1: Introduction to Customer Service Module 2: Customer Service Presentation Module 3: Dealing with Challenging Customer Situations Module 4: Strategy Module 5: Quality Customer Service Standards ACCT 208: Accounting and Finance for Non-Accountants (7 hours) This course is designed for those who use budgets and need to manage cash flow and financial performance of an organization. Using examples you will gain a better understanding of how to prepare a budget. Module 1: Developing a Budget Module 2: Managing Cash Flow and Financial Performance 5

7 MUNICIPAL MANAGEMENT ESSENTIALS MGMT 208: Negotiation Skills (14 hours) Negotiation skills benefit everyone because they have a significant impact on decision making. We negotiate more often than we realize; for purchases, project timelines, priority management, decisions, and personal development opportunities. This program focuses on how to negotiate in business by developing a plan including a BATNA, preparing for meetings, handling objections, and reaching agreement. Participants will explore how negotiations is more than a skill it is a strategic management process to ensure an appropriate balance of workflow that creates more productive and profitable work places. Module 1: Introduction to Negotiations Module 2: Design the Outcome Module 3: Getting in the Game Module 4: Winner Takes it All MGMT 236: Problem Solving and Decision Making (14 hours) Each day we must make a multitude of decisions to solve problems, handle crises, and take advantage of opportunities. In this course, you will examine the influences on decisions, apply ethics to decision making, and learn to apply various techniques and processes for individual and group decision making. As you explore workplace problem solving you will learn to recognize barriers to effective decision making and actions that support effective decisions. 8 COMM 218: Communicating Effectively (14 hours) With so many methods of communication available to us today, it s difficult to know how, when or what to communicate in order to get your message across in the most effective manner. This course focuses on honing your interpersonal communication skills so you ll be able to confidently communicate in the workplace with power and purpose. Module 1: Foundations of Communication Module 2: Interpersonal Communication Module 3: Group Communication Module 4: Communicating In Today s World FOREMAN PERS 121: Time Management and Organizational Skills (7 hours) Improving your skill in time management entails understanding how competing demands can fracture your attention and undermine your productivity. Equally important is learning to manage priorities and follow through on a personal system for time management. Upon completion of this seminar you will leave well-equipped with a tool kit of templates and proven strategies for effectively managing your time. 9 MUNICIPAL MANAGEMENT ESSENTIALS MGMT 217: Conflict Management (14 hours) Conflict is a normal and expected aspect of working together; it exists in human relationships at work as well as in other areas of our lives. Handled poorly, conflict can damage relationships, lower morale and impact productivity. Handled effectively, it can create opportunities for collaboration, effective resolution and healthy change through patience and communication. This conflict management course will help you determine the best approach to workplace conflicts and challenging situations. You will learn to apply an intervention and resolution framework based on a collaborative, interestbased conflict management approach. You will also be provided with tools that will assist you in managing conflict and challenges more effectively.
