This activity is underpinned by world-class standards including the Cogent Gold Standard. Our mission is to be the employers strategic skills partner and go-to place for skills solutions across the Science Industries. All our products and services are designed with science industry employers, are underpinned by national standards and meet the unique requirements of the Sector. Industries covered include chemicals, polymers, biotechnology, lifesciences, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, biomedical technologies, environmental technologies, biomedical devices, explosives, nuclear and organisations that devote the majority of their efforts in the various stages of research, development, technology transfer and commercialisation. 4 4 the go-to place for science industry skills Cogent Skills Strategic Role Led by employers, Cogent Skills role is to ensure the science industries have a pipeline of skilled young people to build a globally competitive sector; as well as supporting the development of the existing workforce to acquire the skills to drive innovation through new technologies and processes. We work in partnership with employers and training providers in order to ensure the right skills, in the right place and the right time. Cogent Skills has over a decade of expertise in skills for science industries. We both respond to the skills demands of business and connect with Government skills policies to ensure the right environment for skills to flourish. The National Skills Academy for Nuclear (NSAN), a subsidiary of Cogent Skills, is the employer-led membership organisation which is ensuring that the UK nuclear industry and its supply chain has the skilled and safe workforce it needs to deal with the current and future UK nuclear programme. Cogent Skills provides value to the nuclear industry by focusing on standards, qualifications and labour market intelligence. Cogent Skills is facilitating, on behalf of employers, a Science Industry Partnership (SIP). This is piloting an employer owned skills system, determining what is needed and commissioning what gets delivered. The SIP is the strategic employer skills partnership for the sciencebased industries. It is also the expert skills subgroup to the key Ministerial Councils which operate across the science sector and is a strong voice within Government on the skills demands of industry. Research Cogent Skills conducts research to improve understanding of the skills needs of science employers. We generate labour market intelligence (LMI), skills intelligence and skills foresights. Information is collated from national sources, and through primary research. We have significant knowledge and expertise in identifying skills needs and solutions for the sector in order to inform, influence and advise on skills, education and funding policy, and to stimulate employer investment in skills. The Nuclear Energy Skills Alliance (NESA), of which we are a member, has asked us to lead on providing LMI for the nuclear sector. In response, we have developed the Nuclear Workforce Model to generate LMI for the needs of a changing nuclear industry, including the operation of existing plants; decommissioning those no longer generating power; the construction and operation of the new fleet of plants; the manufacturing and service supply chains, and regulators. Cogent Skills works closely with Government Departments and agencies, alongside employers, partners and its assured network of training providers, to deliver skills initiatives and solutions for the benefit of science industry employers.

Whether you are developing a programme for thirty apprentices or hiring a single laboratory manager we have a responsive specialist team in place. Vocational Pathways Modular Masters* CPD We offer the following New Talent programmes: Traineeships Traineeships give young people a taste of a career in the science industries. Typically a Traineeship will take the form of a six month training provider-based programme which is supported by an employer offering a work placement. Industry Degree Scheme Placements are highly sought after by students and employers alike. We work closely with universities to develop and match a high quality pipeline of students and graduates with expanding opportunities in industry. Industry Degree Scheme University Apprenticeships / Higher Apprenticeships GCSE / A Levels Apprenticeships Our Technical Apprenticeship Service is a very easy to use service for employers as well as apprentices. The apprentice s training for their job role is mapped out using an Apprenticeship Training Plan (ATP). So you actually decide what makes an apprentice competent. There are three Placement modules to choose from with varying lengths and employer commitments. Using a proven assessment process, our consultants work with your Senior Management Team over a one-day intervention process to discuss the organisation s current Competence Management System, Policies and Procedures in order to identify any gaps. The process also follows the principles of competence assessment used by the Regulatory Authorities during inspections including, for example, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), so it also provides a pre-inspection view of the status. The report issued by Cogent Skills following a Skills Health Check can show an organisation how to bridge the gaps. Skills Consultancy Cogent Skills offers companies a full service to help them develop their Company Gold Standards, analyse skills gaps, develop training plans and solutions and embed Gold Standard values and training throughout the organisation. Services include: Competence Assurance The Competence Assurance portfolio of interventions is designed to deliver business improvement and also helps deliver against the requirements of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) if your business is classed as a COMAH site or the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for those in pharmaceutical businesses. Skills Benchmarking Skills benchmarking helps you to train and develop your employees, benchmarking them against the Cogent Gold Standard framework. Company Gold Standards The Industry Gold Standards define job role skills. By developing your own Company Gold Standards, with the support of Cogent Skills, you will identify relevant additional skills and make the Industry Gold Standards bespoke to your company. Industry Skills Gold Standard In partnership with the science industries, Cogent Skills has established a national skills benchmark for best practice, the Cogent Gold Standard. It details the skills required to do an industry job role and provides a sound basis for workforce development. The Gold Standard supports companies in many ways: as a benchmark; to identify skills gaps; to base appraisals on; for promotions and for defining training provision. Over 40 Industry Gold Standard job roles are available and are the science industry standards for companies to use as a benchmark. Through this framework, individuals can be confident that their skills have been benchmarked to a national, industrydeveloped standard. The framework describes and maps the competencies required to carry out a wide range of jobs across four areas (see left). Solutions for SMEs Our SME Solutions support the small business community to analyse skills gaps and access industry endorsed training solutions. These develop the existing workforce to acquire the essential skills needed for growth including Leadership and Personnel Management; Commercialisation; Market and Data Analysis; Laboratory Practice and Formulation; Design for Manufacture; Quality Assurance, Regulatory Compliance and Intellectual Property.

8 8 the go-to place for science industry skills Courses and Quality Assured Providers Workforce skills development is provided through a range of Cogent Skills (formerly NSAPI) developed, industry focussed courses including expert technical specialities, process safety, leadership & management and biotechnology, covering all levels from operators to the Board. Indeed all our proprietary courses are developed to meet training standards developed in association with employers, stakeholders and Cogent Skills. The one day Process Safety Leadership course provided an excellent platform to engage with our Senior Leadership Team and develop common understanding of the subject. Process Safety Leadership, Management and Operations (PSM Training) Our Process Safety Management (PSM) courses are underpinned with high level training standards which have been developed with the industry led PSM Competence Programme Board which comprises industry, stakeholders and regulatory bodies. The courses have been recognised by the HSE as unique and fully meeting the levels they expect to see in major hazard businesses. Courses include: Process Safety Leadership Process Safety Management Foundations Process Safety Management for Operations (PSMO) Process Safety Management for Operations in-house courses Implementing Process Safety Leadership (IPSL) a two part programme. Leading in the Process Industries (LIPI) Split into 7 modules, LIPI has been developed by industry for industry, to give supervisors the fundamental competencies they require outside of the technical aspects of their job. Learn how to give AD operators the essential knowledge and understanding of the science behind the biogas process. Industrial Biotechnology These courses provide a hands-on working environment, within a scale up/ scale down open access bio-processing facility one of only three live training facilities within Europe. Legionella Control Responsible Person and Awareness This qualification is aimed at Responsible Persons, Directors, Duty Holders and Managers involved in the control of legionella risk. Modular Masters Our innovative SIP endorsed Modular Masters level training provides a flexible, modular programme of Master s degree level training in Formulation Science and Technology to employees in all science-using industries involved in formulation. Quality Assured Training Providers We also have an extensive assured provider network delivering qualifications, and industry-related training courses. Through this network employers are able to access industry expertise whenever, and wherever, they are based.

10 10 the go-to place for science industry skills Funding Support for Workforce Skills Solutions Cogent Skills, the delivery partner for the joint employer/government funded Science Industry Partnership (SIP) continues to invite companies to access SIP funded skills programmes to support their 2015 Workforce Development plans. The quality assured SIP endorsed programmes have been designed by employers for employers, and are aimed at recruiting new talent as well as developing current employees across the science industries including biotechnology, life sciences, pharmaceuticals, healthcare science, medical devices, chemicals and polymers.
