Summary of Competency Units and Competency Elements Competency Units Competency Elements Operator 2.5 Ensure ship/shore access is positioned, maintained and removed safely and efficiently Deploy shore gangway to prescribed procedure (or prepare space on the berth for ship's gangway) Ensure that safe ship/shore access is maintained Assumed Knowledge and Skills Learners for this unit are assumed to: be able to listen, read, speak and write English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills System (ESS) Workplace Literacy Level 4 be able to manipulate numbers at a proficiency level equivalent to Employability Skills System (ESS) Workplace Numeracy Level 4 have completed the Oil/Petrochemical Safety Orientation Course for Workers have completed Mooring Safety Training. 4 Competency Unit 2.5 Ensure ship/shore access is positioned, maintained and removed safely and efficiently Competency Element Deploy shore gangway to prescribed procedure (or prepare space on the berth for ship's gangway) Performance Criteria A competent person should be able to successfully perform the following: Ensure gangways are deployed to prescribed procedures Ensure space on berth is adequate for ship s gangway Ensure that gangways are: Clean and free from contamination Free from defect Unobstructed Safely rigged with nets and other safety equipment as required Take appropriate action if prescribed procedure cannot be followed Range and Context Coverage to include: Procedures for connecting or disconnecting ship/shore gangways Contingency actions General knowledge of ship s access arrangements of access equipment Factors affecting the risks of accidents associated with access equipment Evidence Sources The following is a list of examples of the kinds of evidence that would provide a guide as to where an individual is meeting the standards required to become competent in this competency element: Process Ensuring gangways are deployed to prescribed procedures Page 2 of 6
