Office Phone No: address: dnakamae@hawaii.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION Business 120: Principles of Business surveys the fundamentals of the American business enterprise. Examines the foundations and responsibilities of accounting, business, management, finance, marketing, and the business environment. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of BUS 120, the student should be able to: o Discuss the nature of business and the importance of the profit motive. o Compare and contrast the prevalent economic systems. o Describe the government-business relationship as it exists today in the United States. o Differentiate between short- and long-term financing. o Outline the marketing function and describe its significance. o Describe the focus of current and future operations. o Explain the major issues at stake in labor-management relations. o Discuss the responsibilities and significance of human resource management. o Define the motivational approaches available to the manager. o Identify and define the functions of management. o Describe the authority relationships that exist in an organizations and explain the delegation process.. o Discuss the social and ethical responsibilities of business. 2 GENERAL CLASS POLICIES Class Attendance Since this is a hands-on course, you need to attend class regularly for group and individual activities, class discussions, and lectures. More than two absences may affect your grade. For every class meeting, three (3) hours of homework will be assigned. If you miss class, be sure to get assignments from a classmate or contact me. Being absent is not a valid reason for not completing your assignment. Please understand that I am not a private tutor and will not lecture on a one-to-one basis. Student s Responsibility 1. Attend class regularly. 2. Complete reading the chapter the day it is scheduled according to Timeline of Material Coverage. 3. You are responsible for completing all assignments. If you have difficulty, please let me know as soon as possible. Being confused and not making an attempt to see/call me, is not a valid reason for not completing an assignment. 4. Exams must be taken when scheduled. Make-up exams will be given only if there is good cause. Student s With Disabilities If you have a documented disability and have not voluntarily disclosed the nature of your disability and the support you need, you are invited to contact the Disability Support Services Office, (V/TTY), Ilima 103, for assistance. Class Dismissal Policy Students may leave the classroom if I do not show up within fifteen (15) minutes of the start of the class period. An instructor cannot drop you from a course without your permission. You must initiate the ADD/DROP procedure. I am required to give you a grade and the grade may be an F. Instead, please withdraw officially. Important Deadlines Be aware of important administrative deadlines. Read the Schedule of Courses for last day for erase period, add/drop deadline, last day for withdrawals, bookstore hours of operation, and Final Exam schedule. CRITERIAL FOR GRADING There are four evaluations during the semester. Your grade is determined by the total number of points accumulated for evaluations, chapter outlines (submitted on due dates, late submission not permitted), and Learning Activities. The grading breakdown is as follows: Chapter Outlines 70 pts. A 558 pts. and above Learning Activities 200 pts. B 496 pts. 557 pts. Evaluation #1 50 pts. C 434 pts. 495 pts. Evaluation #2 50 pts.
