Indirect reports: Internal communications officers x2 Workplace community manager Budget: TBD Responsible for the effective management of a total revenue expenditure budget of xx million per annum Context: This is a new senior role in the communications team, created specifically to drive a step change in the impact of internal communications across the charity and employee engagement in Barnardo s ongoing change programme. Previously, responsibility for internal communications was held by the Head of News, but Barnardo s has decided to create a dedicated senior position to lead the function to reflect the significance of the work required. Key working relationships: Internal: External: Key relationships will include (but are not limited to) Corporate Leadership Group; People Team; Digital and Technology Team; Impact and Learning Team This role is focused on internal communications and engagement. 2 Job Purpose: Barnardo s Head of Internal Communications and Engagement is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive internal communications strategy to deliver Barnardo s strategic messages so that all employees and volunteers feel well informed, engaged and inspired to support Barnardo s mission, deploying a variety of online and offline channels. This is a key role working with the senior leadership team to communicate and engage their people in change and create a strong sense of shared vision and purpose across the charity in support of Barnardo s ten year corporate strategy plans and KPIs. Key Responsibilities: As Head of Internal Communications and Engagement you will be a senior leader within the Policy and Communications Directorate, driving innovation and best practice in Barnardo s approach to internal communications and reporting to the Director of Policy and Communication. You will act as internal communications business partner and trusted advisor to the Corporate Leadership Group, developing the strategic messages to successfully engage with internal audiences, advise and support on best practice, and ensure consistent and impactful leadership visibility. The Head of Internal Communications and Engagement will have significant management and development responsibilities setting up a professional expert internal and change communications function as a key enabler of the transformation agenda at Barnardo s. The post holder will head up a team of communication and engagement experts ensuring good change communications advice is provided based on industry best practice, timely communications activity is delivered and their teams are constantly developing professional skills, motivated, working together and achieving their best results at all times; Your key responsibilities will include: Leading and developing a team of experts in change, internal communications and staff engagement. Developing and maintaining a consistent approach to all messages, aligned to our values and behaviours as a leading children s charity. Devising and delivering a range of internal communications and staff engagement strategies as well as advising on business change communications, including identifying and mitigating or escalating key risks, particularly reputational Championing the internal communications function across Barnardo s to embed its position as a centre of expertise and best practice hub Developing, extending the reach and maintaining our internal communications channels and toolsets to ensure that the charity is able to reach all of our employees and volunteers regularly. Establishing and maintaining KPIs to monitor engagement and understanding of key messages across all Barnardo s employees. Responsibility for the performance of the internal communications team of five people, and line management responsibility of an Internal Communications Manager, a leadership engagement officer and shared line management of a Personal Assistant. 3 Key Activities: Develop an internal communications strategy in support of Barnardo s ten year corporate strategy and refreshed communications strategy. Develop and deliver a robust, impactful and measurable internal communications annual plan and individual plans for campaigns and initiatives focused on Barnardo s strategic priorities and major programmes of work. Lead, coach and develop the internal communications team to follow sound principles of communication (simplicity, clarity, consistency, accuracy, audience-focused), adopt new ways of working and evaluate their work to encourage an environment of continual learning and improvement. Manage the production of employee communication materials on time and within budget (including managing relationships with third party suppliers where appropriate). Manage an Internal Communications budget that will deliver the resources and materials to support the team. Lead the continuous development, evaluation and improvement of Barnardo s internal communications channels, including organisation-wide briefings, corporate , Workplace (a social network for all employees), the intranet and other channels This Job Description and Person Specification reflect the duties of the post as they exist at this time and may be subject to changed based on the needs of the Department Programme. Job Title: Head of Internal Communications and Engagement Please note: Applicants must demonstrate in their application form that they currently use the skills outlined below or have used them previously in employment, education, training, volunteering etc. Education/Knowledge A successful candidate would be required to have the following education/ experience Educated to degree level. Professional qualification in a communications or HR discipline, or demonstrating equivalent experience in internal communications. Experience The successful candidate will demonstrate a proven track record in: Communications strategy development and planning; devising and implementing, effective, result-oriented employee communications and engagement programmes, with an emphasis on business change. Advising and influencing senior stakeholders, building strong trusted relationships, contributing to senior level discussions and presenting at high level Managing and improving a range of internal communications channels to maximise impact with employees. Managing a busy team working on multiple projects concurrently and supporting individuals to grow and develop their skills They will be: An exceptional and confident communicator, with outstanding copywriting and editorial skills who is comfortable both advising senior leaders and setting strategy, and rolling their sleeves up to support implementation Proactive and able to take the initiative, innovate, create and encourage a culture of change and improvement A strategic thinker, able to see the big picture and anticipate and manage challenges and risks Adept at working in a diverse environment and demonstrating a good understanding of cultural differences Financially astute, able to maintain tight control of budgets and deliver and support a value for money culture in the team Page 4 of 6 JE Ref No:
