1 Estates and Buildings Division The Post APPRENTICE ELECTRICIAN REF: MC31 The UEA benefits from a comprehensive in-house team providing a reactive and schedule of planned maintenance to help keep the University working, available for emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Department has a wealth of technical expertise with our in-house team that can be supplemented by specialist contractors to keep the University functioning effectively. The Maintenance Department provides both a reactive service and a planned maintenance service. The post holder will work alongside, and be mentored by our experienced trade staff in providing a comprehensive facilities service to the University. The precise duties will be agreed in discussion with the Manager. Person Specification The person specification for this post is attached as Appendix B. GENERAL Salary Salary will be 14,257 per annum on Grade 2 on the single salary spine. The post holder will be eligible for annual salary increments that are payable on 1 August each year. It is anticipated that upon completion of an agreed training and development plan, and on successful completion of the City & Guilds Apprenticeship programme, the post holder will be appointed to the role of Semi-Skilled Tradesperson at a starting salary of 18,031 on Grade 4 on the single salary spine.

2 Starting date The post is available from 1 September 2014 on an indefinite, full-time basis. Annual Leave Entitlement There is an annual holiday entitlement of 20 days plus statutory (8 days) and customary (6 days) holidays. Superannuation The post is superannuable under the Universities Superannuation Scheme. 4 APPENDIX A JOB DESCRIPTION REF: MC31 Job Title: Grade: Department: Reporting to: Apprentice Electrician 2 (Maintenance Staff) Estates and Buildings Division Assistant Maintenance Manager (Direct Labour) Job Function/Purpose: To enable the apprentice to gain and enhance relevant skills, knowledge and experience in an electrical role by working alongside a qualified tradesperson. The role will be undertaken within the framework of an agreed training and development programme Main duties and include: the role holder will be closely supported and supervised in the delivery of tasks and activities. Training and development: The apprentice will work alongside a qualified and experienced Skilled Tradesperson and will receive coaching and mentoring in a range of electrotechnical topics. The apprentice will be provided with training and development to enhance their skills and knowledge in a range of activities associated with an electrotechnical role, including: Electrical installation condition reports (periodic inspection) New Distribution-boards New builds and extensions Replace sockets and switches and install new light fittings Extra sockets and lights Fault finding Maintenance and repairs Installation and maintenance of new electrical equipment Data-cable installation Kitchen installations Boiler wiring Smoke detectors Electrical surveys Modernising electrical installations in old buildings New office layouts Lighting upgrades Planned maintenance Lamp replacement Alarms and CCTV

5 Tasks and duties: The apprentice will gain hands-on experience by undertaking a range of tasks and activities, including: Assisting and working under the guidance of qualified trades employees. Undertaking a range of maintenance tasks suited to the current level of training and development. Conducting routine planned maintenance as detailed by the Concept Evolution Computer Aided Facilities Management System (CAFM). Supporting production activities at all times by ensuring minimum response times to equipment breakdowns and achievement of equipment availability targets. Maintaining safety and regulatory equipment at all times and reporting any defects. Attending college and completing course work on time and to a high standard. Ensuring all college work and logbooks are kept up to date, in accordance with the apprenticeship requirements. Producing, maintaining and taking responsibility for content, accuracy and sign off of log books. Understanding and complying with policies and procedures. Carrying out work in a safe and diligent manner. Complying with all Health & Safety policies and procedures. Attending and fully participating in regular training and development reviews with line manager and mentor. Working closely and interacting with other staff groups within the University. Promoting an environment of continuous improvement and innovation in line with lean thinking and Maintenance best practice. Any other such duties as may be assigned by the Manager that are commensurate with the grade of the post. August 2014
