3 3 Introduction: What is CPD? Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of knowledge and skill and the development of personal qualities necessary for the execution of professional and technical duties throughout the practitioner s working life. As a BRE Global scheme member we will help you to undertake to maintain your professional competence throughout your membership as required by DCLG regulations. It is about developing your skills, we will work with you through this guide and future CPD communication to assist you in the development of your role as an Energy Assessor and the direction of your career. CPD Requirements for Energy Assessors DCLG have recently issued CPD standards within the Scheme Operating Requirements (SORs). These are available within the scheme members area. Three categories of CPD have been defined: 1) Changes in requirements: All items in this category are essential and consist of software, scheme and regulatory changes. Details of training will be provided by the scheme where necessary. These will usually consist of links to short online knowledge checks within the members area which will check your knowledge on updated documents such as Scheme Operating Requirements and Software conventions as and when they are released. All Changes in requirements CPD must be logged on your CPD records within the members area. 2) Other Professional Development: Minimum of 10 hours CPD per year scheme members must develop personal development plans. Full CPD records for this category must be kept either using the online system in the BRE Global members area or alternatively by keeping your own records. Please see the Other Professional Development in detail section for further information. 3) Disciplinary Procedure requirements: No set level as required following disciplinary action. Other Professional Development CPD for multi strand scheme members: Where a scheme member is accredited in more than one strand they must undertake an additional 5 hours CPD per strand in the other professional development category (3 above). Changes in requirements CPD in detail CPD in this category will all be provided to you by the scheme in the Changes in requirements section of the members area. Login to the Members area and click on MyCPD. A red flag next to Changes in requirements CPD means there is CPD due for completion in this section (see fig 1). Click on the changes in requirements CPD button and you will find a list of documents which you must read to bring your records up to date. We will notify you if any mandatory training is required and provide you with the relevant details. Fig 1: a red flag means you have not yet undertaken the required CPD for this category and that there is CPD which you need to complete in the screenshot left there is CPD to complete in Changes in requirements and Other professional development.

4 4 Other Professional Development CPD in detail Keeping your CPD Records BRE Global provides all scheme members with access to an online system to log your CPD, however, if you choose keep your own CPD records elsewhere please be advised that you may be required to provide them to us for an audit of your CPD records. BRE are required to audit 5% of all members CPD records. At the beginning of October (the end of the CPD year) we will issue a request for CPD records to 5% of scheme members and if you have been selected for audit you will have 15 days to submit your completed audit records to us. If you are unable to provide us with evidence of your CPD following our request, as per the SORs, your membership will be temporarily suspended until the CPD has been completed. Personal Development Plan Why? You will need to provide us with an outline of CPD you intend to undertake over the course of the year, outside of Changes in Requirements, which you will find beneficial to your career development. This may include a wide range of subject areas to enable you to address your own development needs, some suggestions can be found later in this guide. Whilst your Personal Development Plan is flexible, it should be in place within the first half of the year to ensure you have set yourself targets in areas which you feel may need improvement. How? To update your Personal Development Plan, login to the members area, click on Other Professional Development and then click on Update Development Plan. Fig 2 below is an example of outline statements which would be acceptable as your Personal Development Plan. When putting together your PDP please take care to consider your strengths and weaknesses and set yourself targets around them. CPD is ongoing and over the duration of your membership your CPD needs will evolve. Try to update your PDP to take this into account by reviewing your knowledge so that it reflects your current needs. What is acceptable CPD? CPD can come in many forms however the main two types of CPD are a) training, whether this be attendance in face-to-face training courses, or training through online courses or videos, and b) learning by studying documents, books, case studies etc which are beneficial to your career development. When claiming CPD you will be required to explain how it has benefitted your professional development. BRE can provide much of your CPD material and you can also find it from many other sources: BRE Training and Events BRE offers training and events across a wide range of subject areas which are all acceptable as CPD. For a list of what is currently available please click here: Please note that you can use your My Rewards points for discounts on many BRE courses. To find out how much discount you can get and which courses it applies to, please click on My Rewards in the Members Area. BRE Publications Our Technical updates and Scheme newsletters will fall into the Change in Requirements CPD category. Some documents which are added to our BRE Global Assessor Network group on Linked-in may also be claimed as CPD. BRE online training Online e-training videos will be available to members in the coming months for a small fee. We will notify members once these are available. Non-BRE Training, E-Learning, Events, Seminars, Conferences etc These do not have to relate to areas specific to your Accreditation as long as they have been beneficial to your career development and are run by approved providers. In Annex B we have compiled a list of links which may be useful in finding other CPD, however this is not exhaustive. If you are in doubt as to whether something can be claimed for CPD please seek prior approval by contacting us at cpd@breassessor.co.uk with as much information as possible before committing to a course or event. Non-BRE Publications Where they are beneficial to career development On-the job learning from industry professionals e. g. shadowing a surveyor Writing papers, articles or lecturing Professional Institution Committee work Assisting/Supporting others Involvement in environmental management systems such as ISO14001 Fig 2.

5 5 What is not acceptable CPD? Courses which may not benefit your career development. When you claim a course as CPD you always need to make a brief statement on how it has benefitted your development. Informal meetings. Time spent on online forums. What evidence is required? To claim attendance at training or an event, you must upload a copy of the certificate or evidence of attendance to the online system. You will also need to make a brief statement on how your attendance at this event has benefited your professional development. If you are claiming a book or publication you will need to describe what you have learned from it ( How has this benefitted my career development? see Fig 3 below) along with a realistic time which you are claiming for this item. Implications of non-conformity? The DCLG Scheme Operating Requirements mandate that all scheme members have to complete the required CPD each year. Failure to do so requires schemes to implement a disciplinary process. To assist scheme members we have developed a simple reminder system to help you continue to comply with CPD requirements. Fig 3.

6 6 CPD reminder process map: Procedure for requesting Other Professional Development CPD Records and escalation procedure for non submittal. CPD Reminder During August a reminder is sent to members to notify them that the end of the CPD year is approaching. All members are encouraged to use the free online system provided. It also includes a list of free recommended CPD to help you meet your required hours. CPD Reminder Further reminder that Other Professional Development CPD records are up to date. During September BRE Global will send a further reminder that the year s Other Professional Development CPD records are up to date. CPD Request 5% of members CPD records are selected at random and requested for audit. On 1st October (the first day of the following CPD year) BRE Global will select 5% of members CPD records to be audited. This 5% will have 15 days to ensure that their CPD is up to date on our online system and meets their annual CPD requirements. Suspension notice Membership is suspended for any of the random 5% whose CPD records are not up to date If CPD records have not been updated 15 working days from the request, membership will be suspended for failingto comply with requirements. Suspension will be lifted ifcpd requirements are met.
