7 Tips and tricks Internet search: freely navigate and follow links to get inspired Network (Ex) Colleagues, friends, acquainted.. don t hesitate to reach out Networking events like this one, Job fairs, interviews, LinkedIn CV and Cover letter should match the job offer/company profile Warning: Find a good compromise between volume and accuracy Use interviews as a playground: ask questions, prepare yourself, review yourself and the company afterwards (On-line) Learning: build competences, test your interests Find your match: the company you choose should match at least some of your values, it s a mutual match 7

12 Differences between private and research Time scales: years months, months weeks, weeks days Often change of topic Deliverables: quick delivery of minimal product, targets can be rearranged to be able to deliver, simpler products are better than no product You know more than you think: no need to know everything, be creative Large vs small company: Large: more opportunities of growth/training, usually better conditions Small: faster, less bureaucracy, work on different phases/aspects of project Independent: you are the boss of yourself, you do what you like, but at your own risk Hierarchy: much more present than at CERN, try to exploit it to escalate up You don t have to take care of everything, perhaps is somebody else s role 12

13 Never stop evolving Am I more worthy for the company than last year? Am I ready for a new step forward? In which direction? Is my work-life balance good enough? How can I improve it? Do I need a training? Do I need coaching? 13
