7 Preface Preface The Tivoli/Plus for PSM User s Guide describes specific features and procedures for using the Tivoli/Plus * for PSM module. This module was jointly developed by Tivoli Systems and the IBM Corporation, and provides an integration of the Printing Systems Manager (PSM) print administration and management product with the TME 10 * (Tivoli Management Environment * 10). Through this integration, the Tivoli/Plus for PSM module delivers the system management capabilities of TME 10 for specific use with PSM. Using Tivoli/Plus for PSM, the PSM application can be managed across a multi-platform network. Tivoli/Plus provides different modules for integrating different production control applications with TME 10. Since all Tivoli/Plus modules have a common interface, a system administrator can implement the system management capabilities of TME 10 with various production control applications while enjoying the simplicity of a common interface. The addition of TME 10 Software Distribution *, TME 10 Distributed Monitoring *, and the TME 10 Enterprise Console * provides additional management capabilities in the areas of client installation, resource monitoring, and event correlation. Note: This release of Tivoli/Plus for PSM marks the introduction of this product to the TME 10 product line. As products join TME 10, the product names are changing. See the Tivoli/Plus for PSM Release Notes for a list of old and new product names. All references to Sentry in this guide refer to TME 10 Distributed Monitoring or its components. 21 Installing from the Command Line Installing from the Command Line Use the winstall command to install the Tivoli/Plus for PSM module. The following example is the syntax for the winstall command and its parameters: Note: The winstall command has a -l license_key option for specifying a product s license key. Because Tivoli/Plus modules no longer require a license key for installation, you do not need to use the -l license_key option when installing a Tivoli/Plus module with the winstall command. Getting Started with Tivoli/Plus for PSM Tivoli/Plus Icons winstall -c cdrom_path -s installation_server \ -i index_file where: -c cdrom_path Specifies the path to the CD-ROM image. -s installation_server Specifies the server on which the product is to be installed. -i index_file Specifies the index file from which the product is to be installed (PSM.IND). See the winstall command in the TME 10 Framework Reference Manual for more information. Although the Tivoli/Plus icons look like (traditional) TME 10 icons, their functionality has been altered slightly to provide a faster, more intuitive approach to navigating and deploying the module s features. In some cases, like a TME 10 Software Distribution file package, menu items have been removed from the icon s pop-up menu to create a more point and click environment. The Tivoli/Plus icons can be activated in either of two ways: Opening or executing the icon by double-clicking on it with the left mouse button. In many cases, double-clicking executes an activity (such as a task) without opening another window. Tivoli/Plus for PSM User s Guide 1 11

22 Tivoli/Plus Unique Features Displaying the icon s pull-down menu by pressing and holding the right mouse button. Generally, either method may be used to access a particular function. There are cases, however, where a particular function can only be accessed by one of these methods. The following icon represents the Tivoli/Plus for PSM resources: To prevent confusion between traditional TME 10 and Tivoli/Plus for PSM functionality, each Tivoli/Plus icon has been overlaid with the Tivoli/Plus symbol to highlight its special functionality as shown in the following example. Tivoli/Plus Unique Features Tivoli/Plus modules use the term profile manager in a somewhat different way than do the other TME 10 products. In a Tivoli/Plus module, a profile manager s primary function is as a subscription list. A subscription list identifies the machines that tasks and jobs run on when executed. Subscription lists can contain machine names or other profile managers. Adding a profile manager to a subscription list is simply a way of subscribing several machines at once rather than adding each one individually. The Tivoli/Plus User s Guide describes the function of profile managers in the Tivoli/Plus modules in more detail. For more information, see the section on subscribers and targets in the Tivoli/Plus User s Guide Version 1.0

23 Starting a Tivoli/Plus Module Starting a Tivoli/Plus Module All Tivoli/Plus modules are kept in a collection under the TivoliPlus icon on the TME 10 desktop.the module s icon is added to this collection after installation. The following icon represents the Tivoli/Plus collection: Getting Started with Tivoli/Plus for PSM Use the following steps to see the modules included in your Tivoli/Plus collection: Tivoli/Plus for PSM User s Guide 1 13

28 Launching PSM Applications Launching PSM Applications When Tivoli/Plus for PSM is installed on a PSM host, the installation process creates an icon for launching the PSM service application from within TME 10. Each PSM server node has its own PSM icon for launching the PSM application from that site. For example, the following icon appears for a server named adara : The PSM application has five logical entry points: the PSM Servers, PSM Spooler, PSM Supervisor, PSM Queue Job, and PSM Queue Printer windows. The logical entry point is preconfigured and appears on the pop-up menu for each PSM@host icon. For example, selecting the PSM Servers Window option from the pop-up menu displays the Service Name window, which then displays the PSM Servers main window. Similarly, selecting any of the other options opens their corresponding windows Version 1.0

31 2 2Software Distribution for PSM Tivoli/Plus for PSM includes six hierarchical, prewritten TME 10 Software Distribution file packages for distributing and installing the PSM applications on hosts. Much of the configuration activity normally associated with a TME 10 Software Distribution file package has been done for you. Using Tivoli/Plus for PSM and TME 10 Software Distribution, you can distribute the PSM Spooler Server, PSM Supervisor Server, PSM Client, PSM GUI and PSM PTF s across a multi-platform network. Installing PSM software is a two-stage process. First, you set up the PSM installation by configuring a TME 10 Software Distribution file package for each type of platform on which you are installing PSM. For example, if you are installing PSM on both a Solaris and a Sun platform, you need to configure a TME 10 Software Distribution file package twice, once for each platform. Second, you distribute the configured file packages by running the appropriate PSM Installation task. This task installs PSM on the selected subscribers for each platform for which you have configured a TME 10 Software Distribution file package. You can distribute PSM to all configured platforms or choose to distribute to only a single platform. Software Distribution for PSM Tivoli/Plus for PSM User s Guide 2 1

32 Configuring TME 10 Software Distribution File Packages Configuring TME 10 Software Distribution File Packages When configuring a TME 10 Software Distribution file package to be used with Tivoli/Plus for PSM, you need to establish the location of the PSM installation directory so that TME 10 Software Distribution can locate the installation binaries and files when installing PSM. Tivoli/Plus for PSM has a different setup icon for each PSM application, which configures a file package for installing the PSM application. Once configured, the TME 10 Software Distribution file packages are installed with a corresponding installation icon (see Installing PSM on page 2-10.) Function Icon Configures a TME 10 Software Distribution file package for distributing and installing the PSM Spooler Server, PSM Supervisor Server, and PSM Client applications. Configures a TME 10 Software Distribution file package for distributing and installing the PTF s for the PSM base products. Configures a TME 10 Software Distribution file package for distributing and installing the PSM GUI application. Configures a TME 10 Software Distribution file package for distributing and installing the PTF s for the PSM GUI application. 2 2 Version 1.0

33 Configuring TME 10 Software Distribution File Packages Function Icon Configures a TME 10 Software Distribution file package for distributing and installing the PSM Client application for OS2. Configures a TME 10 Software Distribution file package for distributing and installing the PSM Client application for Windows. Use the following steps to configure a TME 10 Software Distribution file package. The steps for completing the setup window are similar for each PSM application. The PSM GUI application has its own setup window, therefore you do not need to choose the product to install as you do in the Setup PSM Installation window. You need to complete a setup window for each platform on which you wish to install a particular PSM application. Software Distribution for PSM Tivoli/Plus for PSM User s Guide 2 3

34 Configuring TME 10 Software Distribution File Packages 1. Select the Run job... option from the setup PSM icon of your choice to display the setup window. This window allows you to configure the installation parameters. Note: The following illustration shows the Setup PSM Installation window. The first two blocks of this window are common to all non-pc setup windows. The last block does not appear on the Setup PSM GUI Installation or the Setup PSM GUI PTF Installation windows. 2. In the Distribution Options block, select the type of operating system on which you will be running PSM from the Target 2 4 Version 1.0

35 Configuring TME 10 Software Distribution File Packages Installation Architecture pop-up menu. If the operating system is not listed, select the Don t check option. The architecture type is used during distribution as a validity check of the target nodes. For example, if a file package is configured for the aix4-r1 platform and an attempt is made to distribute the software to a sunos4 target host, this architecture check will prevent the mismatched installation from occurring. The distribution will then continue on the remaining valid hosts. Software Distribution for PSM Note: If the Don t check option is selected, the architecture validity check described previously is bypassed. In this case, it is extremely important to manually verify the target subscription list before distributing the file package, as no architecture checks will be performed to prevent distributing the software image to an incorrect platform. (See page 2-11 for information about manually verifying the subscription list.) 3. In the Source Information block, choose whether the PSM installation files will be taken from a staging area directory (the Staging Area button) or from a tape device (the Tape button). Clicking on either button displays additional fields. If you are installing from a staging area, continue with step 4 on page 2-6. 59 4 4Enterprise Event Management Enterprise Event Management With the TME 10 Enterprise Console, Tivoli/Plus for PSM provides a set of filters for identifying events and a set of predefined correlation rules to automate the task of responding to specific events. An event is any significant change in the state of system resources or an application. In the case of Tivoli/Plus for PSM, an event is a change in a monitored resource that affects PSM or the system on which PSM is running. Examples of events are the starting and stopping of a process, or a host becoming unavailable. Event management provides a predefined or automated response to specific events, so that potential problems are identified and responded to before causing system down time. For example, if a process fails, the TME 10 Enterprise Console can automatically rerun the process. The TME 10 Enterprise Console can also notify the system administrator of repeated process failures that may indicate a more severe problem with an application or the network. For some events, there is no automated response except to be displayed in the TME 10 Enterprise Console. Tivoli/Plus for PSM User s Guide 4 1

60 Configuration Activity Configuration Activity The following section describes the configuration activity that occurs when setting up the TME 10 Enterprise Console to be used with Tivoli/Plus for PSM. This activity takes place on the TME 10 Enterprise Console and PSM servers. Tivoli/Plus for PSM performs most of the setup activity automatically. TME 10 Enterprise Console Server The TME 10 Enterprise Console server is set up to Recognize and accept PSM events. Respond to PSM events according to the predefined rules. Notify the system administrator of the events received and the action taken. PSM Servers On the nodes where PSM servers will be running PSM is configured to send events to the TME 10 Enterprise Console. The logfile adapter is configured to recognize and forward PSM events to the TME 10 Enterprise Console. 4 2 Version 1.0

64 Setting Up the Logfile Adapter for PSM Setting Up the Logfile Adapter for PSM Setting up the TME 10 Enterprise Console logfile adapter for PSM requires configuring the TME 10 Enterprise Console logfile adapter to read the PSM log files and send events to the TME 10 Enterprise Console. Note: The logfile adapter must be restarted after completing this procedure in order for the logfile adapter to send PSM events to the TME 10 Enterprise Console. This happens automatically. To set up the TME 10 Enterprise Console logfile adapter for PSM: Select the Run Job... option from the Configure PSM LogFile Adapter icon s pop-up menu. The logfile adapter will be automatically configured to monitor all of the PSM log files located in the PSM logfile directory (this directory is determined by looking at the PDBASE variable in the /etc/environment file). 4 6 Version 1.0

65 Events and Rules Events and Rules Tivoli/Plus for PSM configures the TME 10 Enterprise Console to receive events from PSM logfiles and TME 10 Distributed Monitoring. The TME 10 Enterprise Console classifies the events and then matches them against the rule base to see if the event has a predefined rule (automated response). The following tables describe the Tivoli/Plus for PSM events and rules. The tables are organized according to the message that the TME 10 Enterprise Console sends to the system administrator for each PSM event. The percent sign (%s) in the messages indicate a variable. The definition for each variable follows the message. Note: The automated action checks if a deliverable address called Psmadmin exists and sends to that address. If the address is not deliverable, the default action sends to root. Enterprise Event Management PSM Events The following table contains the PSM events sent to the TME 10 Enterprise Console.
