Unit of competency overview Unit code and title MEM13014A Apply principles of work health and safety in the work environment. Application of the competency This unit covers essential skills and knowledge that underpin all units within the Metal and Engineering Training Package. The unit applies to working in the engineering, manufacturing or allied industries. Competencies demonstrated would be associated with performance of duties and use of specialist skills. This unit and these standards do not cover the skills of emergency teams such as fire fighting, first aid officer etc. Elements Elements are the essential outcomes of the unit of competency 1. Follow safe workpractices. Performance criteria Together, performance criteria specify the requirements for competent performance. 1.1 Work is carried out safely and in accordance with company policy and procedures and legislative requirements. 1.2 Housekeeping is undertaken in accordance with company procedures. 1.3 Responsibilities and duties of employees are understood and demonstrated in day-to-day actions. 1.4 Personal protective equipment is worn and stored according to company procedures. 1.5 All safety equipment and devices are used according to legislative requirements and company/manufacturers procedures. 1.6 Safety signs/symbols are identified and followed as per instruction. 1.7 All manual handling is carried out in accordance with legal requirements, company procedures and National Work, Health and Safety Commission guidelines. 1.8 Emergency equipment is identified and appropriate use is demonstrated. The WHS Act sets out the legal obligations that must be complied with in all states and territories to provide for the health and safety of workers. The WHS act and regulations includes a list of commonsense objectives to help focus attention on sound workplace safety and welfare principles. The objectives of the WHS Act are to: a. Secure and promote the health, safety and welfare of people at work. b. Protect people in their place of work against risks to health or safety arising out of the activities of others in the workplace.
