6 Mars Engineering Leadership Experience If I look now at myself from last year I can really see the significant change. Not only have I gained a lot of functional knowledge but I have grown as a person. From my first day I became a part of a big community, driven by similar values and The Five Principles. I found a place where I can develop myself and learn from others. A place where people are open and available when you need them. I was given two challenging projects, with real money to spend and a real change to make in the factory. When you know that the new emulsion dozing system, which will influence all lines in the factory, will improve the ways of working, hygienic conditions and quality of the product - you really feel your work matters. And what is great about Mars, you are never left alone, there are always people who would support you, how could you succeed otherwise? What s the best part of the MELE? The best part of the program is that it gives you a lot of opportunities. You get a lot of responsibility and support at the same time. You can really grow, both personally and functionally. Maja Oil & Gas Engineering. Master of Drilling and Geoengineering, AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow, Poland Role: Project Engineer, UK (Year 2 MELE) Royal Canin What does a typical day look like to you? In the life of project engineer there are different phases. When you plan the project you dedicate your day to research, meeting with suppliers and different people. When you are awaiting for the equipment to be delivered you have more time to connect with colleagues, build your network and focus on your development. When you implement your project you spend your day in the factory, managing people and supervising. After that you look at what you did and feel proud.

7 MELE Journey My three placements were broad, managing projects in sustainability, innovation, refurbishment and value creation program. I started in The Netherlands. It s not everyday you get the opportunity to manage the metal detector refurbishment and implement the energy monitoring system, in the world s biggest chocolate factory. During my second year, I moved to our Mars ice cream factory in France. The M&Ms Ice Cream innovation project and leading the value leadership program both gave me great experience and exposure. My final placement was the Maintenance Project Leader in The Netherlands, leading reliability centred maintenance. My first role after the MELE is a Team Leader in our German Chocolate factory. Wherever you go within Mars, it s the people that are the greatest thing. They create the culture and atmosphere. I really enjoy the open, welcoming and fun environment and that everyone is driven to do their jobs with excellence. What s the best part of the MELE? There are many great aspects of the MELE program, however what I value most is how it has helped me to develop my leadership competencies. The workshops, my mentor sharing his experiences, the great line managers, my MELE buddy and my coach stretching me all supported me to become a Line Manager myself. What does a typical day look like to you? As a Team leader, I feel that there is no real typical day. There are some typical aspects, as checking in with my team for a progress update, taking part in the daily maintenance review. However, mostly my day is defined by the priorities of my team and myself. For example it can revolve around, helping or coaching team members, influencing stakeholders or preparing a new project. Laurens Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering. Master Degree in Manufacturing Networks, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands Role: Utility & Sustainability Team Leader, Germany (Alumni) M&Ms What s your favourite Mars brand? Right now I m addicted to M&M Crispy. Once I start, I can t stop eating them!

8 Meet our MELE Trainees In my first year I was a part of the Wrigley Regional Engineering team, being involved in European projects gave me many opportunities to develop and build my network. Taking all the experiences from my first year, I moved to the UK and this time the task is more complex, with a project budget of $5million. Knowing the Mars culture I have never hesitated to grab opportunities. Learning and succeeding becomes much easier when you are surrounded by the best engineers and managers in the business. Bartosz Chemical Engineering, University of Birmingham, UK Role: Project Engineer, UK (Year 2 MELE) Hubba Bubba Christian Master Degree in Automation Engineering. University of Aachen (RWTH), Germany Role: Change Agent, Germany (Year 3 MELE) Twix You get responsibility quickly here, in my first year I managed a 1.5M investment project in our German factory. Working in a cross-functional team with Food Scientists, Quality Experts and Health & Safety colleagues to install the new equipment and achieve the technical deliverables. In my second year I moved to France into one of our biggest M&Ms factories. Along with the cultural change, I experienced a new environment and ways of working, learnt new technologies and expanded my network.

9 I started my career at Mars, as a Lean intern in Pet food. Even as an intern we were given responsibility and encouraged to share our opinions. The Production Manager said I want the Sheba line to be more efficient by decreasing non quality cost. If you have good ideas, we can invest 110K. That s what is great about Mars, being a family owned business and living The Five Principles. Josselin Mechanical/Industrial Engineering. Master Entrepreneurship, Arts et Métiers, Paristech, France Role: M&Ms Team Leader, France (Year 3 MELE) Pedigree Michal Chemical Engineering, PhD, MEng, University of Sheffield, UK Role: Technical Manager, Poland (Alumni) Seeds of Change I love the international and cross segment scope of the program, I have worked in The Netherlands and Poland whilst on the program which broadened my horizon, not only on a functional side, but also personally, with the exposure to so many different people and their cultures. I have always wanted to work for a company where the result of my work would be a tangible product that millions of people around the world would enjoy. I joined MELE at Mars because I was looking for challenging projects in a fast-paced environment to stretch myself, develop my people skills and understanding of the business, and to ultimately accelerate my career into a technical leadership role. Rianne Chemical Engineering. Double Masters in Chemical Engineering and Science Education & Communication. University of Twente, Netherlands Role: IE & Logistics Manager, UK (Alumni) Snickers
