2 UPCOMING EVENTS GEMBA WALK LEADER WORKSHOP FOR TEAM-BASED GEMBA OBSERVATIONS October 3 Monee, IL WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION Attendees in this event learn how to perform an effective Gemba Walk, focused on how a Gemba Walk group can collaborate most creatively. The workshop is about the Gemba Walk process itself; how people observe, document, share, learn and collaborate. The exercise is a comprehensive, quick and confidence-building learning experience for the participants. With a little more practice and preparation back home they can lead people to make insightful observations in their own Gemba Walks that can uncover new opportunities and lead to accelerated continuous improvement. PRESENTED BY Michael Bremer and Brian McKibben, principals in The Cumberland Group and the High Performance Consortiums Network, wrote the book (literally) on organizational maturity for continuous improvement. Five Benefits of Hosting a Regional Event 1 Subject Choice: As a host, you can select the subject. Identify a gap in existing knowledge or experience within your organization. AME will bring in a facilitator to teach the host participants as well as the other attendees. 2 Leverage for Improvements: Hosting an application based event (such as a kaizen event) will provide the host company with tangible improvements in the selected area. Attendees from other companies will be valuable resources during the event to implement real change. AME will bring in a facilitator if required. 3 Network Links: Build your network of fellow continuous improvement and operational excellence professionals that will continue to provide benefits long after the event. 4 Fresh Ideas: Receive suggestions for improvement from attendees after a tour of the host facility. 5 Energy: Use the event as a rallying point for your organization to progress to the next level in your quest for operational excellence, or to reinvigorate a stalled effort. Value Stream Mapping, Lean Office, Pull Systems, TPM, TWI, Daily Visual Management whatever the subject area, AME can help you close a knowledge gap in your organization. Contact t Midwestern Region President Pat Lucansky at plucansky@vipgroup.us to discuss the possibility of holding an event at your facility.

5 Administrative Lean: Opportunity to Boost Competitiveness As many manufacturers do, you may have begun your lean journey on the plant floor. Readily-understood possibilities for improving internal and external customer service, shorter cycle times and other metrics abound on the factory floor. But if your lean transition hasn t yet expanded d to administrative i ti areas, you re missing i significant ifi opportunities to shine, according to Doug Carlberg, president and CEO of M2 Global, San Antonio, TX. As you continue identifying your value streams and achieving related lean performance improvements, look beyond the factory walls, Jeanne Malnati Carlberg suggested. You ll find the seven areas of waste apply throughout your extended enterprise. For example, a third-party telephone survey revealed M2 Global customers frustration with lengthy wait times for the process of supplying a quote. An additional hurdle for customers was a long waiting time for samples. Thanks to several multi-functional kaizen events, the company dramatically trimmed quote cycle time and cut the wait time for samples by 60%, substantially improving its chances for being included on preferred supplier lists. We also looked at the end of the extended value stream, said Carlberg. After evaluating the sometimes-cumbersome process of gathering documentation needed to ship to various customers, M2 Global made the move to a largely-paperless office. In turn, the time and space required for meeting customers data requirements shrank significantly. Carlberg offered tips for gaining a competitive edge through lean office processes. It all starts with the education of your workforce about the seven areas of waste, and why you are streamlining processes, he said. Also, involve people from office functions in plant floor improvement initiatives such as kaizen events, value stream mapping (VSM) and reducing setup time. Find one success story that people in administration can embrace. You re changing your business model. As you involve people in multi-functional teams -- getting them out of the office -- they are gaining new understanding and experience with lean. They can become your lean champions in the office. Carlberg also noted the need to look beyond 5S tools. Critical questions include: Do we really need all these steps? How can we eliminate or avoid all delays and interruptions to achieve optimum workflow? By combining or eliminating steps, adjusting rules for prioritizing work between steps and using lean tools such as VSM and mistake proofing, administrative folks can achieve lean improvements as ably as their counterparts on the shop floor.
