3 Objectives SSHRC and Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC), an agency of the Department of National Defence Supports research relevant to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and DND Fosters effective, evidence-based strategies, policies and programs in research areas identified by DRDC

4 Value & Duration DNDRI supplements in addition to value of Insight & Insight Development Grants $20,000 per year for 3 years ($60,000 total) to successful Insight Grant recipients $10,000 to successful Insight Development Grant recipients

10 THEME 1: Personnel - Recruitment and Selection Selection Tests Selection tools to assess cognitive ability, integrity, personality both positive and negative aspects resilience/hardiness, situational judgement, etc. Integrity & personality testing, as well as advancements in cognitive ability testing for selection/hiring purposes, and online selection testing. Challenges inherent in testing, including: computerized/online testing; cultural and language issues in test development; and test accommodations for reasons related to religion, learning disability, and physical and mental health.

11 THEME 2: Readiness - Training and Development Emerging learning and training modalities Address knowledge gap in evaluating the effectiveness of existing learning and training approaches in environments with evolving threats Evaluate learning and training mechanisms, and maximize their effectiveness and readiness for current and emerging threats for CAF, allied forces, and first responders

12 THEME 3: Social Processes in the Workplace Diversity, gender and armed forces Military personnel from diverse communities Inclusive Military organization Developing trust in diverse organizational teams and in cross-cultural settings Multi-organizational and multicultural teams Frameworks, models, and theories to better understand the psychological and group dynamics in either diverse organizational or diverse cultural teams

13 THEME 3: Social Processes in the Workplace Transition to civilian life: The role of identity in the transition process. Role of identity in Military-Civilian Transition (MCT) Wellbeing in post-service MCT - Veterans and their families Innovative ways to inform identity disruptions and develop healthy post-service identities

14 THEME 4: Operational Effectiveness Individual, social and cultural dimensions of radicalization Culture, society, group membership, identity, gender, mental health, and sense of belonging Mitigation strategies

15 THEME 4: Operational Effectiveness Ethical dimension of using artificial intelligence in defence and security Artificial intelligence (AI) Ethical implications of specific technologies in a military and a public-safety context, Technical, institutional, legal, and regulatory elements of an AI code of ethics, Immediate and emergent challenges posed by adversarial use of AI and robotic technologies by non-state actors and competitive nation states.

17 THEME 4: Operational Effectiveness Shaping attitudes, opinions, and behaviour Beliefs, opinions, or behaviour shaped by individual, group, media, industry, or state actors through persuasion or deception (e.g., misrepresentation and information manipulation) techniques. Qualitative and/or quantitative approaches to understand how factors such as individual vulnerabilities, group processes, gender, and social identity contribute to shaping attitudes, opinions, and behaviour in the physical and online environments.

19 THEME 4: Operational Effectiveness Civil military relations Effective, collaborative relationships between the military and civilian populations. Expand on current theories of civil military relations at strategic, operational, and tactical levels in the variety of settings and contexts
