1 HOLY ANGEL UNIVERSITY LIBRARY Library Pathfinder Organizational Behavior (No. 1, August 2018) DEFINITIONS Organizational Behavior It refers to the actions and attitudes of individuals and groups toward one another and towards the organization as a whole, and its effect on the organization's functioning and performance. ( html) It is the study and application of knowledge about how people, individuals, and groups act in organizations. It does this by taking a system approach. That is, it interprets people-organization relationships in terms of the whole person, whole group, whole organization, and whole social system. Its purpose is to build better relationships by achieving human objectives, organizational objectives, and social objectives. ( ~donclark/leader/leadob.html) It seeks to understand human behavior in organizational contexts. It examines the ways people cope with the problems and opportunities of organizational life. It results from the many complex interactions that occur daily between humans, groups of humans, an the organizational environment in which they spend their workday. It is also the actual behavior of individuals and groups in and around purposeful organizations. It is the application of the theories, methods, and research findings of the behavioral sciences particularly those of psychology, social psychology, sociology, cultural anthropology, and to a lesser degree economics and political science to promote understanding of the behavior of humans in organizations. It is an interdisciplinary field dedicated to better understanding and managing people at work. By definition, organizational behavior is both research and application oriented. Three basic levels of analysis in OB are individual, group, and organizational. It draws upon a diverse array of disciplines, including psychology, management, sociology, organization theory, social psychology, statistics, anthropology, general systems theory, economics, information technology, political science, vocational counseling, human stress management, psychometrics, ergonomics, decision theory, and ethics. (Kreitner, Robert and K. Angelo. (Organizational behavior. 6 th ed. Boston: McGraw-Hill.) Studies the impact in individuals, groups, and structures have on human behavior within organizations. It is an interdisciplinary field that includes sociology, psychology, communication and management. Organizational theory, which focuses on organizational and intra-organizational topics, and compliments human resource studies, which is more focused on everyday business practices.
