How did it decide who to protect? What protective actions did it undertake and how? What were the defining elements of the community? Who controlled decision making and who had a voice? Who owned the decisions and who benefitted? Was the intervention inclusive of all groups of the community including age, gender and diversity? What was the impact of the community s protection mechanism(s) on persons who are often marginalized (e.g. sexual and gender minority groups)? How was decision making shared between men and women? 3 Description of the role your agency played: Please explain how your agency went about identifying, mapping, assessing, and supporting community-based protection mechanism(s), including for example: How did you determine which community groups or structures to work with? What role (e.g. catalyst and facilitator, interlocutor, capacity builder, representation with authorities) did your agency play relative to the community? What inputs (e.g. financial or in-kind resources, information, training) did your agency make to support the community s protection activities? What other resources (e.g. capacities, skill sets, internal resources, methodologies, partnerships) were required to enable this CBP initiative? How did you adapt your work during your intervention with the community (e.g. to overcome constraining factors, build on enabling factors, ensure mutual learning)? 4 Analysis of the impact of the community-based protection partnership: Please explain any lessons learned through this process, including, for example: How did you measure the impact your organization s work had on the overall protection outcome of the community? Did the work of your agency interfere with the communities actions? For example, were there also incidents were your intervention conflicted with/ discouraged the communities actions? Did you encounter harmful or unhelpful community practices or power structures? If so, what were they and how did you respond and/or try to address them? What factors constrained your actions or the community s actions (e.g. donor requirements, partner organizations, approaches of partner organizations, project planning requirements, political or conflict dynamics)? 5 Supporting Change and a Better Response: Please explain in more detail whether using a community-based approach helped to: Change your organization s understanding of protection perspectives in this given context and whether priorities identified by affected populations were prioritized within the response/initiative. Point to new opportunities and ways of addressing protection needs as they are determined by the local perspective. Observe any difficulties/challenges in matching the specific local understanding and priorities with those of a more streamlined international and normative understanding of protection.
