3 OVERVIEW As the economy continues to grow, we expect the positive trends of 2018 to continue into 2019 with both SMEs and multinationals ramping up their recruitment requirements. Belfast s reputation for Centres of Excellence has done much for the economic landscape and has reinforced the region as a highly desirable place for FDI. The outlook is positive but the lack of a Stormont Executive and Brexit have raised some understandable concerns and this is causing some caution on job creation forecasts. Conversely we have noticed a significant increase in roles from multinational employers, in part due to talent shortages across Britain and the continued salary gap making Northern Ireland a far more attractive location for businesses. We are still seeing considerable positive movement on jobs, particularly within back office, shared service centres, engineering and legal sectors. However those in the manufacturing and FMCG sectors are understandably wary about the potential impact on potential trade barriers on exports and will have some adjustments to do. Salaries are rising albeit slowly but benefits continue to play a key part in attraction and retention of staff. For smaller organisations, softer benefits will feature more prominently throughout 2019 as they strive to become more attractive to potential & existing employees. Companies are more aware of their competitors offerings and are being forced to become more innovative in the structure of their own remuneration and benefits packages. Flexible ways of working are also top of the agenda for both employers and job-seekers and are very important in an ever changing and diverse workforce. Salary increases will continue to be at a level of around 2-5% across finance, HR, sales, marketing, manufacturing, engineering, supply chain and accountancy sectors. Expectations for candidates changing employers lie at around 5-8% of base salary. The strong performing areas for 2019 are Training & Development (a hot topic for most companies as they invest in their own teams and train them on global trends that will affect their market) and GDPR, which came into law in May 2018 and will ensure a prolonged focus from organisations on data protection and privacy. In-demand jobs across GDPR include project managers, (temporary, contract and permanent), legal professionals in data privacy and protection and general data protection officer roles. These roles stretch across the majority of sectors but in particular across financial services, IT, legal, pharmaceutical, banking and digital marketing. All indications are that recruitment requirements for 2019 will continue in an upward trajectory across the majority of areas and that organisations will seek to hire those professionals who will give their companies a competitive edge. We expect 2019 to continue to offer significantly more opportunities for commercially focused candidates as employers embrace a more positive outlook for future development and expansion.
