2 Performance Sport Manager Sport and Physical Activity, Facilities Directorate Do you have an enthusiasm for sports development and elite sport? Do you have excellent communication skills with the ability to build string working relationships and networks? Do you have experience of managing a team? The University of Leeds has a new strategy for sport which articulates our aim of becoming the leading provider of University sport in the UK. Through this strategy we are committed to ensuring we provide opportunities for our students, staff and members of the local community to develop their skills and fulfil their sporting potential. You will be responsible for the development and delivery of the university s performance sport programme and the development of its high performance clubs. Key areas of responsibility will include the successful leadership and implementation of the current University of Leeds and Leeds University Union s joint strategic plan for sport and physical activity. This includes, for example, a Sports Scholarship Programme, athlete recruitment, high performance sports club development and leading a multi-disciplinary team of support staff. You will work with our sports clubs, athlete scholars, sporting partners, coaching staff and sports practitioners to create the best culture and environment to enable us to fulfil our sporting potential. As an inspirational, motivating and committed Performance Sport Manager, you will help us to maximise our national standing within British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) competition, create high performing teams and develop international athletes who will represent their country and the University on the world stage. Your working week will be split across two locations; one being the university health and fitness complex, The Edge which is on the University of Leeds campus, and the other being the Weetwood Sports Park in Headingley. This is a full time role working 35 hours each week. There may be some requirements to work evenings and weekends.

3 What does the role entail? As a Performance Sport Manager your main duties will include: Leading the ongoing development of University of Leeds and Leeds University Union performance focused sports clubs, with a particular focus on creating a training and competitive environment that is conductive to sporting excellence as well as taking account of welfare issues and ensuring clubs are complying with organisational policies; Leading the successful implementation of aspects of the current joint strategic plan for sport and physical activity; Planning, developing and delivering a successful performance sport programme, working with students, coaches and other colleagues to deliver a programme that promotes athlete and squad development through all levels of competitive sport; Leading the management and development of the University s Sport Scholarship Programme including planning and implementing a long-term athlete recruitment strategy that enables the University to recruit talented athlete-scholars; Providing support for the development and introduction of a dual-career policy for University student-athletes seeking to perform at the highest level whilst studying for a world-class degree; Coordinating performance support services to athletes funded or managed through partner organisations as appropriate; Supporting the management of the University Coaching Scholarship programme including the annual recruitment of scholars, the ongoing management of these students and the liaison with colleagues in the Alumni Office; Managing the day to day running of the TASS (Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme) programme and being the site lead for this programme; Leading and managing a multi-disciplinary team of support staff including head coaches, physiotherapists, strength and conditioning coaches and sports masseuses, including holding regular reviews to monitor performance against targets; Actively engaging and working with internal departments (including Student Recruitment, Leeds University Union and Faculties) as well as external partner organisations (including National Governing Bodies, sports clubs, schools and FE Colleges) in the implementation of the athlete recruitment strategy,

4 performance sport programme and to manage the University s performance and participation in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) competitions; Responsibility for the performance sport budget on a day to day basis and supporting the development of the future budgets in relation to strategic plans; Representing the University on sports specific forums and participate in the development of performance sport plans for the city and region, where appropriate; Supporting the service in future prioritised facility development projects, representing the views of performance sport stakeholders; Working with colleagues in the University Health and Safety Team and Leeds University Union to ensure that we provide a safe environment for all of our competitive students. These duties provide a framework for the role and should not be regarded as a definitive list. Other reasonable duties may be required consistent with the grade of the post. What will you bring to the role? As a Performance Sport Manager you will have: A qualification at degree level or equivalent; An understanding of managing sports development, including a knowledge of sport science or a related subject; Knowledge and understanding of UK and international sport performance and elite sport systems as well as the athlete support services and how they should interact to provide an excellent performance environment; An understanding of higher education sport in the UK; Experience of budget management and financial reporting; Experience of working within a student environment; Strong leadership and management skills with experience of managing, motivating and developing a team of staff and an ability to lead and motivate students and volunteers; Team oriented whilst also able to work independently when required; Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to persuade, negotiate and influence others, the ability to communicate with a diverse

5 customer base and proven ability to build positive working relationships and networks; The ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines, to prioritise workloads and the ability to take a solution focussed approach; A willingness to undertake further training and learn new skills; The ability to demonstrate behaviours in line with Commercial and Campus Support Services and University values. You may also have: Relevant experience in the higher education sector; Experience of using a Leisure Management System; Experience of marketing and promotion within sport; Knowledge of relevant health and safety procedures and accepted good practice; Experience of strategic planning and project management; Sports Coaching and/or fitness instruction qualifications.
