POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: Director of Engineering IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: President SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES: Yes DEPARTMENT: Engineering FLSA: Exempt 1. GENERAL SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide leadership and coordination of all company engineering functions. Develop and implement an engineering strategy for development of new products. Implement a cycle time reduction strategy to reduce wasted time, run parallel processes and utilize automation. Establish a visual system with clear priorities that align with the product prioritization schedule and company product development goals. Build cross functional teams within the department to ensure knowledge remains within the company and is documented. 2. SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: A. Legal 1. Oversee patent application(s) to ensure the protection of company proprietary designs. 2. Research equipment designs to ensure company is not infringing on patent(s). B. Engineering Resource Planning, Design and Analysis 1. Coordinate and partner with all departments to ensure that resources are available for all engineering projects from initial concept until use of the product by consumers using the Lean Product Development process. 2. Set clear priorities for the engineering team using a visual management tool. 3. Implement rapid prototyping to speed up time to market. 4. Implement design optimization for manufacturability and assembly. 5. Partner with production to ensure products conform to engineering design and manufacturing processes. 6. Partner with purchasing and vendors to develop component improvements and cost reductions on bought out items. 7. Attend shows where equipment is displayed to compile information relative to projects and/or to assist Sales department with selling Summers equipment. May

2 C. Research and Development 1. Research and analyze data, such as customer design proposal specifications, research publications, literature and manuals to determine feasibility and schedule of design projects. 2. Ensure that products are designed using knowledge of engineering principles, and are meeting the requirements of Summers Manufacturing Company and the customer. 3. Test for and/or determine magnitude, direction and point of application of tension, compression and bending forces, and develop geometric shape of machine parts to accommodate operating loads. 4. Field test prototypes and machine changes. Compile and analyze test data to determine effect of machine design to provide the customer with state of the art products. 5. Ensure that existing products continue to meet customer and Summers Manufacturing Company, Inc. expectations. D. Department Personnel 1. Responsible for providing leadership, coaching, and support to the engineering team. 2. Responsible for evaluating and developing the performance of engineering staff. 3. Foster an atmosphere in the engineering department of team work, trust, and respect between engineering and other departments. E. Administration 1. Oversee the timely creation and maintenance of operator s manuals, machine assembly manuals and parts manuals. F. Communication 1. Provide written or CAD documentation to applicable departments to ensure that all projects standards are maintained. 2. Collaborate with the VP of Engineering and the Director of Innovation on engineering goals and project timelines. 3. Preside over engineering department meetings. May

3 G. Department Management 1. Establish and implement departmental goals, objectives, tactics, policies and operating procedures. 2. Develop and manage engineering budget. H. Executive Team Member 1. Help develop and maintain desired company culture. 2. Provide leadership for the organization. 3. Support teamwork. 3. JOB SPECIFICATIONS: 4. Provide frequent communication throughout the organization. 5. Work with all departments to develop long term strategy and business plans for the company. A. Education/License/Certification Requirements 1. Four (4) year degree in engineering or equivalent field of study, required. Mechanical or Agricultural engineering degree preferred. 2. Valid North Dakota driver s license with a clean driving record, required. B. Experience Requirements 1. Minimum of ten (10) years diversified experience in manufacturing plant management or design engineering and a minimum of five (5) years of engineering supervision, required in lieu of education described above. 2. Knowledge of and experience with various shop tools, required. 3. Experience with CAD, required. Experience with Syspro or other ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software, preferred. 4. Excellent customer relation skills, required. E. Physical Requirements 1. Ability to walk and stand for long periods, up to two (2) hours, required. 2. Ability to sit up for long periods of time, up to four (4) hours, required. F. Lift and Carry Requirements 1. This position requires infrequent lifting and carrying of machine parts, weighing up to 70 lbs. in the following situations: a. Lifting parts from machinery while working on a machine. b. Carrying parts short distances. 2. This position requires infrequent lifting and carrying of machine parts weighing over 70 lbs. using hand truck, hoist or forklift. G. Equipment/Tools Requirements 1. Ability to utilize forklift, hoists or hand truck, preferred. 2. Ability to utilize computer, plotter and scanner, required. 3. Ability to utilize a variety of hand tools, required. 4. Ability to operate farm equipment, preferred. H. Environment Requirements This position involves work inside and outside the plant, where conditions may get dusty, hot, cold, noisy and smoky and may involve exposure to some odors: 1. Ability to work around fume sand chemicals, required. May

5 2. Ability to work around moving parts, required. 3. Ability to work outside, required. 4. Ability to work around loud noises, required.
