2 WELCOME TO THE COACHING QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER! Welcome to the first edition of the Coaching Quarterly e-newsletter. Every three months we will be bringing equestrian coaches in Canada news on professional development, updating and educational opportunities. Our goal is to provide up-to-date, valuable information and resources to help our equestrian coaches and instructors grow, develop and learn. The Coaching and Education staff at Equestrian Canada (EC) is working with the Provincial and Territorial Sport Organizations (PTSOs) and several committees and subject matter experts to develop, refine and revise our nationally certified Coaching Program and Long-Term Equestrian Development (LTED) programs like Rookie Riders, P tit Trot and the Learn to Drive and Learn to Ride English/Western programs. ONE PRESTIGOUS COMPETITION, THREE POWERFUL CLINICS EC Officials and Coaching Professional Development Clinics Being Offered at the 2018 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair! Nov. 2, Hunter Judges Clinic with Randy Roy Wondering what the Hunter Judge looks for in the ring, or are you looking to refresh your judging skill set? Join renowned EC Senior Hunter Judge and Course Designer Randy Roy for the day while he educates participants on the fundamentals of judging hunters and equitation both over fences and under saddle. This clinic combines classroom theory with practical judging during the pony, childrens and junior hunter classes in the Coca- Cola Coliseum at the Royal Horse Show. Open to certified EC Hunter Judges for upgrading or maintenance purposes, as well as coaches, parents, and those interested enthusiasts looking to learn more about what the judge is looking for in the ring. *3 PD points available for EC NCCP Certified Nov. 8, 2018 NCCP Analyze Performance Jumping & Equitation with Chris Sorensen Looking to develop your coaching eye to better analyze performance? Join Chris Sorenson (Canadian Equestrian Team member and EC NCCP High Performance 1 Jumping Coach), along with Danielle Yaghdjian (2018 EC Coach Developer of the Year, Competition Coach Specialist and Learning Facilitator), and Helen Richardson (EC Coordinator for Coaching and Education, NCCP Competition Coach, and Learning Facilitator) for this interactive clinic. Together, the clinicians will help participants hone their skills at analyzing performance, while also familiarizing coaches and coach candidates with the LTED plan. This clinic will combine classroom theory with course walks, practical analysis and review in the Coca-Cola Coliseum during a mixture of Junior Jumper and U-25 Jumper classes, and the CET Medal Finals. *5 PD points available for EC NCCP Certified Nov. 9 & 10, 2018 General Stewards Clinic with Tina Collins Looking for the low-down on general stewarding, with an emphasis on the Breed Sports? Join EC Senior General Steward Tina Collins as she invites you to explore the ins and outs of stewarding at the various breed sport competitions offered in Canada. This clinic will also provide the knowledge needed to take on the steward role in 2 October Volume 1, Issue1

3 many other EC disciplines, including Hunter and Jumper. This clinic combines classroom theory and live demonstrations for new General Steward Candidates, as well as those looking to upgrade or refresh their stewarding skills. *3 PD points available for EC NCCP Certified Find out more at EC S NEW COACHING COMMITTEES You might have heard the news EC has two new Coaching Committees, working hard to provide coaches and instructors with the necessary tools to make the equestrian experience safe and enjoyable for all participants, horse and human, and to develop excellence in horsemanship. The two new national coaching committees are: The National Coaching Operations Committee (NCOC) The NCOC provides strategic guidance and counsel to EC management for the delivery of, and advocacy for, Equestrian Sport National Coaching Certification Programs (NCCP) and athlete development. Members of the Committee are appointed by the PTSOs and include a representative from the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) as an observer and advisor. With assistance from subject matter experts, the NCTC develops new education resources and programs, including initiatives and content that is relevant, accurate, appropriate and effective in meeting the growth of coaching and athlete development today, and into the future. 5 COACHES & OFFICIALS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CALENDAR You can also find Professional Development opportunities for coaches and officials on EC s new Coaches and Official Professional Development Calendar: ANNUAL RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS In order to maintain your NCCP certification status, you must obtain or renew the following requirements on an annual basis, unless otherwise noted: EC Sport Licence EC Coaching Levy PTSO membership First Aid certificate every three (3) years or as designated on certificate Police Background Check as determined by your PTSO We also advise that you check with your PTSO regarding any additional annual requirements. QUESTIONS? COMMENTS? CERTIFICATION MAINTENANCE Once certified as a coach, your certification maintenance follows a five-year cycle and uses a points-based tracking system that is built into your NCCP Locker account. Within five years of your initial date of certification, you must obtain a minimum number of points by completing professional development activities.
