3 INTRODUCTION Salary Guide Autumn 2018/Spring 2019 Each year, Jennings Morton Friel Associates deliver a detailed salary guide to our network of employers and candidates in late summer/early autumn. The guide provides a quick view of key salary metrics alongside our interpretation of the market as a whole up to and including Quarter 3. A useful reference point for end of year remuneration discussions. Last year was a challenging year for Permanent recruitment, with uncertainty around Brexit affecting employer and candidate confidence. Roles in 2017 took longer to fill, however as we approach 2019, with Brexit uncertainty more prevalent within business, contrastingly companies now appear to be reacting faster to fill vacant positions in A recent UK Government report confirmed a 43% drop in the level of people migrating from the European Union to the UK. Which we feel has led to an increasing shortage of talent within the market place, and contributed to a sharp rise in salaries, particularly across Transactional to Middle Management job categories. This is further underlined by data from the Office for National Statistics; which signalled that average weekly earnings in the South East increased by 4.7% to 710. As we approach the final quarter of 2018, demand remains high for Finalist Part Qualified and Recently Qualified Accountants, particularly with Finance Business Partnering skills and/or strong MS Excel. Requirements for candidates from Practice are also significant, with businesses and organisations making attractive offers to entice recently Qualified Chartered and Certified Chartered into Industry; More commonly as Financial Accountants, as well as Finance Managers/Business Partners and Analysts. Salaries have therefore increased in these entire job roles this year. We have yet to see this trend impact on Executive salaries, however, are carefully monitoring its development. The counter offer seems to making a return; an uncommon occurrence since the era before the financial crisis. As of August 2018, the South East of England has seen a sharp and accelerated rise in permanent job vacancies and a steeper reduction in candidate supply. The inevitability of which has been a steep rise in salary inflation. The latest increase in starting pay for permanent workers was the quickest recorded since September 2017 (source - IHS Markit Economics). The desire for workplace flexibility is very much on the agenda and will remain so well into Flexible working being a frequent talking point between companies and employees. This topic includes working from home, flexitime, increasing holiday entitlement, and/or additional personal days offered for exams, revision, duvet days, birthday, volunteering or moving days - The list expanding to cope with modern day working and life requirements. The Qualified Interim market has remained static; with technology companies increasingly driving people requirements across a number of Senior Finance and Middle Management roles, as other industries, particularly Retail and Banking, reduce or right size staffing levels.
