2 ABOUT ORGANIZATION Representing a population of 5,700 residents and located 100 km east of Edmonton, the Town of Vegreville is rich with history, culture, and festivals. Adaptability Inclusivity Integrity Teamwork Vibrancy THE OPPORTUNITY Reporting to the Town Manager, the Economic Development Manager will be highly visible and responsible for marketing the business and economic development interests within the community. Taking a lead role in attracting businesses to the Town of Vegreville, the Economic Development Manager will be involved with working with the Vegreville Economic Development Advisory Board and various Town departments. This position provides guidance to the business community to establish, relocate, and/or expand their businesses within the Town. KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES Economic Development Principal staff liaison to the Economic Development Board Responsible for attracting new business to the community and facilitating economic growth for the community Encourages business retention and expansion within the Town Develops a positive business environment that contributes to the sustainable economic prosperity of the municipality Develops a professional working relationship with Vegreville & District Chamber of Commerce as well as the Community Futures Elk Island Region OPPORTUNITY PROFILE Economic Development Manager 2

3 Works collaboratively with other economic development organizations, REDA, and provincial agencies Always promotes the Town s strengths and advantages and ensures economic development information is available to all interested parties Establishes and maintains an information database of demographic and market research materials from regional, provincial, and national sources Business Development Identifies opportunities to showcase Vegreville s pro-business stance Responds to enquiries from the business community and public by providing support to a wide range of proposals related to development, expansions, relocations, etc. Responds to information requests from potential investors and developers Board Strategic Plan Provides overall coordination and oversight for the planning, organization, and implementation of the board s initiatives as outlined in the economic development strategic plan Monitors overall key performance targets as set out by the board s economic development strategic plan Partnerships and Liaison Develops and maintains relationships with all town departments to facilitate business development Builds networks with stakeholders at the local, regional, provincial, and national levels As a key town representative, creates networks to promote economic development with other government organizations, financial and educational institutions, as well as community and business groups Administrative Creates reports, delivers presentations, and provides professional advice to the Town Manager and Council on matters and activities related to economic development Prepares and administers the economic development budget KEY COMPETENCIES Experienced in business planning and business expansion/marketing strategies Aware of local, regional, and provincial economic potential and opportunities as well as possible threats to local economy Can build strategic partnerships and facilitate the development of relationships Knowledgeable of relevant legislations, policies and procedures Understands local economic, cultural, and political environments Understands rural economies OPPORTUNITY PROFILE Economic Development Manager 3

4 THE PERSON QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS College or university degree in commerce, economics, or related field Professional Economic Developer [EcD] Experience in the economic development, marketing, and public relations disciplines Preference will be given for relevant experience in local government Valid Alberta Driver s Licence KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES Among other attributes, the following will be important: Strategic Leadership and Planning Is a proven leader and strategic thinker. Enjoys working with elected officials. Knows and understands the importance of working closely with municipal jurisdictions and the provincial orders of government. Understands policy development and legal processes. Communication Skills Is skilled verbal and written communicator; has strong presentation skills; is open and transparent along with welldeveloped communication skills. Respects a diversity of opinions. Possesses strong public speaking skills. Media Relations Can act as spokesperson for the Town. Has effectively managed media and public relations. Financial Management Is timely and efficient in all budgeting, financial, and information reporting and planning.
