1 Job Title: Head of Campaigns and Advocacy = Department: Programmes Directorate Job Family: Campaigns and Advocacy: Senior Management Team for Programmes Directorate Reports to: Director of Programmes Grade: AAI Grade F (base salary 54,372) UK Equivalent Band 7 Location: IS Hubs CRB Required: NA: Standard: Enhanced: Direct Reports: Role Overview: Campaign Managers, Youth Engagement, Campaigners (Comms Coordination) Job Role Takes overall leadership on achieving our global strategy ambition to become a more effective campaigning force, improving the quality of our local and national campaigning work as well as developing multi-country campaigns to address structural causes of poverty. Promotes an integrated and strategic approach to campaigning, making full and effective use of our research, policy analysis, lobbying, coalition-building, communications, and mobilising capacities. Ensures that the organisation develops and invests in campaigning systems, skills, research and advocacy, and builds creative tools to link, organise and energise our partners and supporters at all levels and to achieve our target of 5 million supporters and 5 million youth actions worldwide. Accountabilities Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities: Strategic/ Functional Leadership Key Activities To lead the development of 3 international campaigns that are consistent with AAI values, mission and international strategy, that inspire staff, partners, supporters and potential supporters and that deliver real change in the lives of people. To produce and build member agreement on a 5-year strategic plan for campaigning in the new strategy, including resourcing, systems and accountabilities. To advance strategic and creative integration of campaigning with other types of programmes and with fundraising and communications. To provide leadership across the organisation for the 3 campaigns, overseeing project teams composed of networks of staff across the geography, theme and functions. Acts as a key change agent, responsible for translating ActionAid International s strategic change agenda into departmental plans and operational delivery Responsible for cascading and reinforcing the organisation s mission,

2 vision and values and direction through the use of clear and articulate communications both within the departmental structure and with the Member and country community Campaign Development & Management Communications Coordination External Focus To produce an annual plan and budget for the campaigns and advocacy team To mobilise adequate resource and capacity from other units (secretariat and members) in support of our campaigns and ensure that our campaigns make best possible use of member expertise and potential. To direct campaign implementation internationally that will inspire and mobilise all parts of our organisation, our partners and other stakeholders To develop systems to monitor and evaluate the impact and effectiveness of ActionAid s campaigning and advocacy work. Manage the communications work of the campaigners in the group, on the basis of the policy goals and analysis Ensure that campaign messages are clear and focused to intended targets Ensure regular communications within the organisation and beyond the organisation. Work with both policy staff and media and marketing staff to develop the communications strategy for the campaign To act as a key external spokesperson for our campaigns and a highlevel lobbyist with senior external figures. Network and alliance build outside the organisation to ensure wide support for campaign objectives In particular, build and strengthen sustained relationship with peoples organisation and social movements including women s movement and women s rights organisations in relation to campaign People Management Performance management and staff development of direct reports and contribution to appraisals. Supports campaign managers to ensure effective matrix management and accountability for project team members not directly line managed by the department. Monitoring the department s performance against the agreed organisational standards and ensure that problems are identified and resolved. Supporting both the professional and personal development of senior staff within the department to ensure that they are able to remain proactive on all matters thereby maximising and integrating the effectiveness of the service they provide to fulfil corporate goals and

Staff management experience in a large, decentralised organisation and in a complex, uncertain international environment Extensive experience of developing and leading complex multi-country

4 advocacy strategies and an understanding of how to influence political structures and decision makers Excellent organisational and analytical skills and in particular the ability to think and operate strategically in a fast changing campaigning environment, underpinned by a good understanding of international institutions and processes, development issues and debates Excellent communicator and skilled spokesperson, with ability to represent advocacy messages with authority and credibility to the outside world Experience of working in coalitions and skills in alliance building and networking Dynamic and empowering leader able to exert influence and drive change without line management authority Exceptional women s rights understanding, analysis and commitment Exceptional negotiation and influencing skills, with the credibility and management experience to broker agreement with senior managers within the organisation.
