1 CERTIFICATE IN MANAGEMENT STUDIES As part of the University s strategy of increasing lifelong learning and widening participation, the Management Centre and the Leicester Institute of Lifelong Learning are offering a Certificate of Higher Education in Management Studies. The Certificate is a part-time programme aimed at junior supervisory staff and those wishing to begin the process of acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary for managerial posts and functions. It combines face-to-face teaching with developed support materials to enable students to gain 120 credits at level 1 over a period of 13 months (September to October). COURSE AIMS The aims of the certificate programme are: To develop an holistic perspective on the development of management studies. To assimilate historic perspectives within the contemporary business environment. To develop an appreciation of the skills and abilities that contribute to effective management practice, in particular in line with the University s learning and teaching strategy, to develop appropriate quantitative communications and ICT skills, and the ability to apply these in organisational contexts. COURSE OBJECTIVES By the end of the programme students should be able to: Describe and discuss the role and functions of management within an organisational context. Demonstrate an understanding of the broader environmental context. Reflect and develop insights into their own managerial skills and potential. Apply, in a business context, the tools and techniques acquired through study. COURSE OUTLINE The course comprises: 3 Modules of 15 credits Combined Marketing and Accounting modules of 15 credits 2 modules of 10 credits Each of these is of 5 weeks duration A Project period of 14 weeks from early July to mid-october 3 written assignments based on Modules 1, 2 and 5 (45 credits) 1 x 2 hour integrative examinations at the end of the last taught module (20 credits) 1 Group assessment for modules 3 and 4 (15 credits)
