2 DEFINITION & DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS To attend, participate in and successfully pass all required classes in a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified academy, which requires basic law enforcement training in academics, leadership, tactical skills, general performance and physical ability. Upon successful completion of the academy, incumbents will be promoted to the position of Police Officer. This is a trainee level, non-sworn position which differs from that of an Entry-Level Police Officer in that the Police Trainee is not a sworn classification and is a recruiting and training-level class used for candidates qualified to learn the duties of an Entry-Level Police Officer. In the position of Police Trainee, incumbents do not have Peace Officer status. Failure to graduate from the P.O.S.T. Academy training program within the prescribed academy schedule will be grounds for termination from the program. THE POSITION Essential Functions: Attend a P.O.S.T certified police academy and participates in all required classes and training exercises. Successfully complete and pass all required classes. Maintain, operate and safely store all specialized police equipment necessary for the Academy. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required by the Police Chief, Police Commander and/or Police Sergeant to meet the needs of the Police Department. Responsible for self-compliance with regulations, policies and procedures. Accept responsibility and exercise reasonably appropriate discretion in matters not specifically defined or described in the Police Department regulations, policies, procedures, and job description. Consistently demonstrate exemplary courtesy, initiative, diligence, truthfulness, attention to duty, and observance of proper personal discipline in accordance with Police Department standards. Perform other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Basic verbal and written English language, grammar and spelling to be able to reasonably communicate information with the public and/or complete relevant written documentation required by job activities. Basic math and calculations. Operational characteristics and use of modern equipment including office equipment, computers and supporting word processing applications. Upon completion of the Academy, ability to demonstrate knowledge of basic laws, procedures and techniques related to policing. Principles and practices of exceptional customer service. Ability to: Complete and pass the P.O.S.T. certified Police Academy. Prepare and write clear and concise reports. Interpret, explain and apply federal, state and local laws and Lexipol policies, procedures and regulations by graduation of the Academy. Effectively and proficiently use and care for a firearm by graduation of the Academy. Participate in all required classes. Analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective and reasonable course of action. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Comprehend and follow oral and written instructions. Work independently in the absence of direct and immediate supervision. Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing applications. Operate a vehicle safely, under normal and emergency conditions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities. Experience: No experience is required.

3 QUALIFICATIONS (cont d) Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, e.g. a high school diploma or a GED. License or Certificate: Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California driver's license throughout employment. Possession of, or ability to obtain, valid CPR and First aid certificates. Other: Minimum 21 years of age upon successful graduation from the Academy. Eyesight: Correctable to 20/20 in better eye and not less than 20/25 in lesser eye. Method of correction to be evaluated per POST standards. Must be free from color blindness. Character: Good moral character. Physical Condition: Height and weight must be in proportion to one another; the ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, run, stand, sit, or walk for prolonged periods of time; the ability to discharge a firearm; and operate vehicles. Personal Appearance Standards: Ability to meet the Department s personal appearance standards: Department members are not allowed any tattoo, brand or body art that is visible while wearing any standard authorized Department uniform. Modification of Department uniform standards in order to conceal tattoos, brands or body art is not allowed (i.e. the wearing of long sleeve shirts year round). 4 COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS Salary: $4,687 - $5,697 per month Police Non-Sworn (Range 27). Public Employees Retirement System: Employer contributes to retirement benefits through membership in the State Retirement System. New employees are under the PERS formula of 2% at 62 (PEPRA). The employee pays the full 6.25% (currently) employee contribution to PERS. Classic employees are at the 55 plan, with the employee paying the full 7.0% employee contribution. Social Security: The City participates in the Social Security Program. Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance: The City contributes up to $1,584 per month for family coverage for Life Insurance: City-paid $40,000 life insurance. Vacation Leave: Employees receive vacation with pay of 80 hours after one year of continuous service. Vacation leave is increased periodically to a maximum of 160 hours after 15 years of employment. Holidays: Non-shift employees are provided 13.5 paid holidays annually. Sick Leave: Sick leave with pay is accumulated on a basis of 8 hours per month with a cap of 1,000 hours. Upon retirement, 50% of accumulated sick leave can be paid out, up to a maximum of 450 hours. 25% of unused sick leave accrued during the year may be converted to cash or vacation leave. Equipment Allowance: $150 annually. Uniforms and Equipment: All uniforms, dry cleaning and safety equipment is provided by the Department. Educational Incentives: Educational/POST certificate incentives of 2.5% for AA Degree/POST Intermediate Certificate or 5% for BA Degree/POST Advanced Certificate. Tuition reimbursement of $1,200 annually. Employee Assistance Program: City-paid for employee and dependents. Psychological Examination: To evaluate emotional suitability for police work (based upon POST standards). Failure to successfully complete any portion of the selection process disqualifies the applicant.

5 SELECTION PROCESS (cont d) *** Applicants must show proof of successful completion of the P.O.S.T. PELLET B (written exam) and physical agility tests within the last year before the application deadline in order to meet minimum qualification for the position of Police Officer Trainee. Allan Hancock Law Enforcement Academy will be holding the P.O.S.T. PELLET B (written exam) and physical agility testing on Friday, August 4th 2017.*** Upon completion of the PELLET B and physical agility tests, selected candidates will proceed to an oral interview with the Arroyo Grande Police Department. Once selected, incumbents will assume non-sworn duties in the department and attend the P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Academy in Lompoc, California (scheduled to begin in January 2018), which is (6) months in length. THE POLICE DEPARTMENT Arroyo Grande offers a generalist Police Department where officers have the time and resources to do police work rather than continually responding from call to call. Specialty opportunities include Investigations, Field Training Officer, K-9, Motors, School Resource Officer, Bicycle Patrol, Regional SWAT and In-Service Training Instructor.
