1 Enrichment at Hills Road Sixth Form College All Year 12 students follow a compulsory Enrichment ac vity, which can be taken as either a full year course, running over two terms, or two half year courses (i.e. one course in Term 1 and another in Term 2). The Enrichment programme is designed to extend and broaden students A level programmes through providing the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and experiences in a variety of ac vi es. You will be able to choose which Enrichment ac vity you d like to follow from the extensive list below. At 11:15am on Monday 17 th December, you will be sent a link via e mail to sign up to your chosen Enrichment. You will have un l 8pm on Wednesday 19 th December to do so. Please ensure you make a considered choice as changes to selected Enrichments will only occur in extreme circumstances. Things to consider are; Does the enrichment take place at lunch or a er College? Does the enrichment include a payment or specific equipment? Am I barred from this Enrichment because I am already taking an A Level in the subject (check brochure below to find out)? Please note that ONLY Enrichments that fit with your metable will be shown on your sign up page. Sign up is live, and first come, first served, so places will disappear as they are taken. Once all are gone, that Enrichment will drop off the list of op ons. The Enrichment Term 2 starts in week beginning 14th Jan 2019 and will finish on Friday 5 th April. There is no Enrichment in Term 3.

2 Whole Year Enrichments If the Enrichment you had in Term 1 was a full year Enrichment (i.e. Chinese / a College Sports Team / Duke of Edinburgh Award /Japanese / The Phoenix College Newspaper / Robo cs / Volunteering / Hills Road Ambassador / Youth STEMM Award), you will not need to choose a new Enrichment for Term 2 as your exis ng one will carry over. IF you are a member of one of the College music ensembles (Chamber Choir / College Choir / Folk & Roots Group / Jazz Choir / Jazz Orchestra / Symphony Orchestra / Wind Orchestra) and intend to con nue this Enrichment in Term 2 (either as a requirement of your Music A Level course or because you just want to), you must contact Mrs Marsh (mmarsh@hillsroad.ac.uk) to confirm this ASAP. If this is the case, you will not need to sign up for another Term 2 Enrichment. If you want to take part in a music ac vity as a non metabled extra in Term 2, please DO choose a new Enrichment for Term 2. Be aware that some ensembles require audi ons contact the Music department ASAP for further advice. If you have dropped out of a College Sports Team (because of injury or for any other reason), please speak to Mr Duffy (aduffy@hillsroad.ac.uk) ASAP. In most cases, you will then need to choose a new Term 2 Enrichment.

Join just for fun or get in training for the Hills Copa del Hills tournament that runs in term 2. Who will this enrichment suit / not suit? Escape the cult of the Reptile God! Find the lost treasure in The mad wizard s castle! Anything is possible in the fantasy roleplaying world of Dungeons & Dragons. Suitable for anyone who wants to explore D&D: roleplaying, making maps, questing, writing adventures, creating Characters or just watching & listening. No experience necessary, just an open mind. 4 ARCHAEOLOGY & ANTHROPOLOGY Course Information: I nterested in the past but bored w ith History? Fascinated by w hat makes us all human? Then this is the enrichment for you. We ll be getting to grips with British Archaeology from the Palaeolithic onwards but branching out to take in developments elsewhere in the world like the nature of the Mayan city states of Mexico. And, in Anthropology, we ll be looking at the evolution of hominids and how human beings become properly defined persons through things like rites of passage. There will be presentations, documentaries and lots of opportunities for discussions. Want to know about the Vikings? Interested in what we have in common with the Nuer of Sudan? It s a sport anyone can have a go at. You ll be taught basic techniques and discover the meaning of the many unique terms linked to archery: Fletching, Nock, Quiver. Using a Recurve bow you ll soon be hitting the gold target on a regular basis. Lots of fun, so if you were inspired by Robin Hood or the Olympics to have a go at archery, this is your opportunity. 5 BADMINTON, SQUASH, TABLE TENNIS Course Information: As with all racquet sports, the emphasis will be on beginners or improvers with group coaching in skills and match play. The emphasis is on fun, playing games and improving your play along the way. The main focus is on badminton but you may also play squash and table tennis in this session. All equipment provided but you must wear kit to play. If you enjoy these sessions, you can also come along to social badminton on Weds p.5 in the Sports Centre (as a non-timetabled extra). The ceramics enrichment programme provides an experimental and fun environment to learn new skills in no previous experience necessary. You will be taught a wide variety of basic techniques including coil, slab and pinch pots; with the opportunity to work with earthenware, stoneware and porcelain clay. You will also have access to a wide variety of stamps, cutters, tools and glazes and be encouraged to make functional objects that you can either keep for yourself or give as a gift! 6 CHEMICAL PHOTOGRAPHY Course Information: This course is very useful for art & design students, but is equally enjoyable for those students looking for something completely different to their other subjects. Photography students can use this work to support A Level studies if they wish. This enrichment is for students who want to learn the basic techniques of black & white photography, from understanding the controls on your camera and how to improve your photographs to processing film and making enlargements in the darkroom. You will be given the opportunity to take photographs on location including a visit to the Botanic Garden as part of the course, where you will receive practical advice from your teacher. It is essential that you have your own, or access to a 35mm SLR camera with manual function, for the Duration of the course. There is a fee of 20 towards the cost of film, paper & chemicals, which is payable at the Bursary. Who will this enrichment suit / not suit? COLLEGE CHOIR Course Information: This is a choir of around 100 students which performs major works from the choral repertory, such as Handel s Messiah and Mozart s Requiem. No audition required. 7 GETTING THROUGH : EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION Course Information: This course is open to all but particularly suitable for students looking to boost their Employability. You should be willing to participate in group activities. We will look at topics like basic BSL and Deaf Awareness and Gender & Language, as well as a range of communication skills, including presenting, writing clearly & professionally and getting your point across. Then the Creative Writing Enrichment course will offer youpractical opportunities and time to experiment and develop as a writer of different genres and styles from fiction, poetry, drama, biography, autobiography and journalism. 8 DEBATING Course Information: This is a very useful and enjoyable enrichment. Useful, because it develops communicationskills transferable to everything from writing essays to applying for University to arguing with parents! Enjoyable,satisfying, because there is a great social side to the enrichment. If you wish to take this subject more seriously there is the opportunity to represent the College in national and international competitions, where Hills Road has enjoyed considerable success. 9 DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY Course Information: This course is very useful for Photography and Art & Design students, but is equally enjoyable for those looking for something completely different to their other subjects. Photography students can use this work to support A Level studies if they wish. Digital cameras are part of everyday life and used for a wide variety of reasons, from artistic exploration to recording events and activities. Learn a range of skills: how to improve your image taking on a number of different devices including smart phones, using the functions on your device much more effectively, basic Photoshop and image editing app techniques, and the benefits of sharing images online for support and feedback. You will also have the opportunity to work through a number of themed projects to help you refine your image making ideas. This program can be used to improve the presentation of work in any A Level subject, whether it be photos of field trips or experiments, or presentation designs for projects. You will need access to a digital camera, Smart phone or tablet for the duration of the course. Who will this enrichment suit / not suit? 10 FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY Course Information: For those students who want to do something a bit different, this course is designed tointroduce you to new disciplines using photography, design and organisational skills as well as a good way to boost your confidence when working with others. Your course brief is to design and shoot a front page cover for a fashion magazine. Part of that will involve you organising a fashion shoot in either the Photography Department s studio or on location using portable flash lighting. You will be taught how to use the studio and location lighting techniques, as well as basic Design and Photoshop skills to help you meet the brief. DRAWING & THE MIND Course Information: How often have you heard the phrase I can t draw? Perhaps you ve even said these words about yourself this enrichment is for anyone who enjoys the experience of putting pen to page without concern for what makes a good or bad drawing. Emphasising the value of the drawing process, you will be encouraged to doodle, make marks, try drawing with your eyes closed or using your less dominant hand, all the while exploring how such approaches can engage the mind in new & interesting ways the simple, universal act of drawing can also be an excellent tool for reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of inner calm. The sessions will be highly practical and experimental, incorporating both individual and group work. No technical skill is required all you need is an open mind! Additional Information: 15 places. 11 FITNESS / BOOTCAMP Course Information: A w hole-body workout and a whole lot of fun! See how far you can push yourself using a variety of equipment. High intensity sessions, ideal for developing all round cardio fitness at the same time strengthening and toning the body. Open to all, work at your level, above all, have fun working out! FOLK & ROOTS Course Information: Folk & Roots is an ensemble consisting of melody instruments (fiddles, whistles, flutes, etc.) and various accompanying instruments (accordion, bass, guitars, hand drums). The group play lively tunes taken from British traditions, Europe and beyond. The group is run by Stu Hanna of Megson fame! Students have the opportunity to perform in the Jazz & Folk evening at the end of Spring Term and at other College concerts and / or Open Evenings. This is a LUNCHTIME Enrichment. 12 HILLS ROAD RADIO SHOW Course Information: Ever wondered how a radio show is made? Have an interest in broadcasting and presenting a dynamic, exciting show? Well now you have a chance to go behind the curtain by making your very own Hills Road Radio show, to be broadcast on our internet radio podcasting page! Over the course you will learn: About different styles of broadcast from radio plays to cutting edge rock and DJ shows. How to program an interesting and varied music schedule that your listeners will enjoy How to record, edit and mix tracks and vocal together using digital editing techniques How to script a show and grab the attention of your listeners This is a LUNCHTIME Enrichment. You will discover basic holiday survival Italian; ordering in restaurants, buying in shops, asking for directions, using public transport and finding accommodation. In addition to this you will be viewing some popular Italian films (subtitled), to encounter different aspects of the Italian way of life in recent years. 13 JAZZ CHOIR Course Information: This is a soprano, alto, tenor and bass choir to suit enthusiastic singers with little experience of choral work and who enjoy a more contemporary repertoire from popular, Gospel and jazz traditions with performances often accompanied by a backing band. Some ability to read music is useful, though not mandatory. There are no auditions. Rehearsals are light-hearted with the emphasis on having fun whilst developing valuable vocal and ensemble skills. There will also be some improvisation Sessions for all levels of improvers. Players should have some reading skills although this is not essential, and a desire to improve. Typical line up: Saxophones Alto, Tenor, Baritone Trumpets, Trombones and other lower brass Piano Rhythm and Bass Guitars Drum kit and hand-held percussion Students will have the opportunity to perform in the Jazz & Folk Concert at the end of the Spring term, and in other College Concerts and / or at Open Evenings. 14 MASTER A MOOC Course Information: MOOC stands for massive, open, online course. These offer an opportunity to study a high quality course on a topic of your choosing, and are provided for free by many Universities in the country. You will study independently, but will be supervised on a Wednesday afternoon, period 5 in a computer area. Hundreds of courses are available from learning all about your abdomen, to exploring World War 1 in depth, from film-making to exploring the role of football in society. You will get to choose a topic that interests you you could decide to enhance your current studies, pursue an interest, or look towards a course that might help you with University Applications in the future. Full guidance will be provided in the first enrichment session on how to start choosing the MOOC that you wish to study. This is a LUNCHTIME Enrichment Additional Information: None. 15 LIFE DRAWING Course Information: The course will involve drawing or painting from the life model in a variety of media. Students will learn about the proportions of the human figure. AS Art & Design students will be able to use the work as part of their coursework submission and it will help with their observation skills. Students contemplating architecture as a career would find it useful as part of their portfolio for interview purposes. This is a LUNCHTIME Enrichment. N.B. Fee payable ( 6) Please direct all enquiries to: Miss Whittlestone (ewhittlestone@hillsroad.ac.uk) This Enrichment takes place on: Tuesday LUNCHTIME MINDFULNESS Course Information: Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way, in the present moment, on purpose,non-judgmentally. This course is an introduction to the practice of mindful awareness, and is based upon themindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) approach. It is not a therapy-based or counselling course, nor is it meditation. Mindfulness is, however, based on the principles of meditative reflection, and many people who practice regularly have found it very effective in dealing with symptoms of stress, anxiety and negative thinking. The course will introduce you to some of the basic techniques for mindful practice; the extent to which you benefit will depend entirely on the amount of practice you do in your own time. Each session will involve a review of your experiences of the previous week s practice, the introduction of a new technique and some mindfulness practice. Practice will generally involve sitting or lying quietly, eyes closed, listening to a guided meditation. Loose clothing is preferable but not essential, shoes will be taken off and you must be comfortable with sitting or lying still for extended periods of time. This is a LUNCHTIME Enrichment. 16 MUSIC TECHNOLOGY Course Information: This lively course provides a chance for those with an interest in the modern music industry to sequence, record, mix and produce their own music using the College s extensive facilities. You will work in small groups or individually, and are given free rein to create music of your choice. You will use Logic Pro to compose and produce your music and will be able to take home a final project produced during the course. Who will this enrichment suit / not suit? PROBLEM SOLVING & TEAMBUILDING Course Information: This is a fun session to help improve your problem-solving skills, decision-making and develop different thinking skills. By working as a team member you will develop listening, negotiating and collaborative skills. If you love lateral thinking, challenges and working as a team then you ll enjoy this course! 17 ROWING FOR BEGINNERS Course Information: Cambridge is very fortunate in having world-class rowing opportunities and facilities. This Enrichment is offered for BEGINNERS to rowing who may have some experience but are NOT PROFICIENT, and takes place on the river on Saturday afternoons. Each training session is 2 hours long and the course will last for 10 weeks. There is a maximum number of 8 places still available. Many students progress from this course into the College s 1 st and 2 nd crews! There is a 40 fee for the course. This enrichment takes place on Saturdays from 2:30-4:30pm. Who will this enrichment suit / not suit? Suitable for those with an interest in sport, who can commit to 2-hour training slots on Saturday afternoons and are either beginners or NOT proficient rowers. Please direct all enquiries to: Mrs Swain (lswain@hillsroad.ac.uk) This enrichment class takes place on: Saturday 2:30-4:30pm, on the river Cam SAWSTON VILLAGE COLLEGE MATHS MENTORING Course Information: This course is a volunteering opportunity offered in conjunction with Sawston Village College. Students will help pupils at SVC on improve their Maths skills. All resources for the students to work on are provided by SVC and no specialist knowledge is needed beyond having passed Maths GCSE. The pupils at SVC are very receptive to working with college students and it makes a change from always working with a teacher! The scheme will run for 5 or 6 weeks from 3-5pm on a Wednesday afternoon* (thus accessible through out Enrichment programme and totalling the same number of hours as all other enrichments). SVC will collect students from College at 3pm if necessary; travel home afterwards will be discussed according to need.. Is there any time commitment over the normal timetabled hour a week? 18 SCHOOL OF SANCTUARY Course Information: A School of Sanctuary is a school that is committed to being a safe and welcoming place for all, especially those seeking sanctuary. This could be people whose lives were in danger in their own country, who have troubles at home or are just looking for a space of safety. Hills Road is about to embark upon a new and exciting journey to being awarded School of Sanctuary status. Do you have a passion for supporting people who are in need of protection? Would you like to be a part of driving this forward? Would you like to develop project management skills? If so, why not consider joining the School of Sanctuary project management group? The commitment will initially be weekly meetings and project work, but the scheme will be longer term and therefore we need students who are willing to continue to be a part of this project until the end of the academic year* although the meetings will become less frequent once we are up and running. 19 SPANISH (FOR BEGINNERS ONLY) Course Information: The Spanish for Beginners course will be a mix of language and culture and you will learnbasic conversation such as: introducing yourself and talking about your family, ordering food and drink, booking accommodation and talking about your holidays. The skills most emphasised will be speaking and listening and you will have many opportunities to practise your new skills in pair and small group work. You will also learn more about Spanish culture, e.g. fiestas. Who will this enrichment suit / not suit? SOCIAL NETBALL Course Information: The emphasis in this enrichment is on beginners and improvers with group coaching on skillsand match play. 20 SOCIAL VOLLEYBALL Course Information: Maybe you ve been inspired by beach volleyball in the Olympics or just looking to learn a new sport. You ll be taught the basics of the game, then the focus will be on game play. If you enjoy this session, there will be an opportunity to progress onto club volleyball. This informal enrichment is perfect for anyone looking to meet new people and spend time getting lost in the world of fin, scary and surprisingly moving books like IT, Carrie, Pet Sematary and The Mist. We might even watch some movies This is an enrichment option for anyone who is interested in Stephen King. You don t have to have read anything to participate, and you are welcome to just show up and listen in, or read. 22 UNLOC ENTERPRISE BUSINESS & ENTREPRENEURIAL DEVELOPMENT Course Information: Run by Unloc Enterprise Academy, this exciting programme is specifically designed to motivate and inspire young people into business. You will develop your innovation and entrepreneurship skills through a blend of masterclasses, talks and hands-on exercises where groups create then pitch their business ideas in a dragons-den style activity. All of the skills developed by Unloc are transferrable and relatable to the real world, both within industry and through running your own business.
