PIA today represents approximately 4,800 professional members across Australia. and 230 professionals internationally. PIA supports planners by advocating for better planning. We do this by collaboration with government, academia and the public and private sectors to improve the delivery of planning services to the community. PIA recognises and celebrates excellent planning through our annual Awards for Planning Excellence program. We hold other events throughout the year and across jurisdictions to inform and enhance planners and their skills and to build awareness of the importance of good planning within the wider community. OUR OBJECTIVE Is to focus on policy and advocacy, strengthening our position as a commentator and source of policy advice on planning issues. We work with all levels of government; the property development industry and the community to create better planning systems focused on quality outcomes. ABOUT PLANNING + + Planning is about the management of growth and change in order to achieve liveable spaces and places that are socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. Often referred to as urban planning or town planning, planning is specifically concerned with shaping cities, towns and regions by managing development, infrastructure and services. + + Planning strengthens communities, facilitates economic development and improves the choices available for where and how people live and work. Planning helps identify hazards and reduce risks to create more resilient communities. It also identifies and protects environmental, social, cultural and heritage values. Good planning creates suburbs, towns and cities that facilitate healthier and more active lifestyles. + + Currently Australia is facing significant and complex demands that will impact on our society, our environment and our economy. These challenges include population growth, demographic change, infrastructure and transport provision, climate change, resource scarcity, food security and changing economy. Planning is an important tool to address these often competing demands to create the best outcomes for our communities. + + Planning is highly topical and features heavily in public debate. Planners are multi- disciplinary professionals who facilitate decision-making and help to balance private, government and community interests to create net future benefit. They engage with communities to develop visions for the future and the change needed over time to achieve the desired future for their city, town or neighbourhood. 2 Planning Institute of Australia (South Australia)

11 2016 Awards for Planning Excellence The PIA Awards for Planning Excellence celebrate the contribution that planners and planning make to society, to highlight exceptional examples of planning and to inspire others to achieve the same high standards. Participating in the Awards for Planning Excellence is a small but important way to demonstrate your commitment to advancing the profession. Leadership in planning, particularly in the face of adversity, is acknowledged and applauded. In all, the Awards are a chance to celebrate, recognise and reward outstanding planning and planners. It provides the opportunity for recognition in excellence and to showcase leading practice across a range of planning disciplines and sectors. As a national program, the Awards commence at the state and territory level seeking out the best of planning in each jurisdiction. The winners of the appropriate categories in the state/territory Awards are then elevated to the national stage for the National Awards for Planning Excellence presentation ceremony, which acknowledges the best of planning and planners that Australia has to offer. In 2011 a revised set of categories were implemented which are better focused on planning practice and planning leadership than in the past. The previous discipline-focused categories have been replaced in favour of more holistic categories that better represent the multidisciplinary nature of planning practice. Additional categories have been created to celebrate planning leadership by both planners and non-planners.
