2 Representing approximately 4,800 professional members across Australia. About PIA THE PLANNING INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA The Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) is the peak national body representing the urban and regional planning profession. PIA s mission is to lead effective planning for people and places to ultimately deliver good planning outcomes for our communities. We do this by advocating for better planning, developing high quality planners, and supporting the profession. Founded in 1951, PIA remains at the forefront of promoting excellence in local, regional, state and national planning within the public and private sectors. PIA today represents approximately 4,800 professional members across Australia. PIA supports planners by advocating for better planning. We do this by collaboration with government, academia and the public and private sectors to improve the delivery of planning services to the community. PIA recognises and celebrates planning through our annual Awards for Planning Excellence program. We hold other events throughout the year and across jurisdictions to inform and enhance planning skills and to build awareness of the importance of good planning within the wider community. OUR OBJECTIVE Our objective Is to focus on policy and advocacy, strengthening our position as a commentator and source of policy advice on planning issues. We work with all levels of government; the property development industry and the community to create better planning systems focused on quality outcomes. ABOUT PLANNING + + Planning is about the management of growth and change in order to achieve liveable spaces and places that are socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. Often referred to as urban planning or town planning, planning is specifically concerned with shaping cities, towns and regions by managing development, infrastructure and services. + + Planning strengthens communities, facilitates economic development and improves the choices available for where and how people live and work. Planning helps identify hazards and reduce risks to create more resilient communities. It also identifies and protects environmental, social, cultural and heritage values. Good planning creates suburbs, towns and cities that facilitate healthier and more active lifestyles. + + Currently Australia is facing significant and complex demands that will impact on our society, our environment and our economy. These challenges include population growth, demographic change, infrastructure and transport provision, climate change, resource scarcity, food security and a changing economy. Planning is an important tool to address these often competing demands to create the best outcomes for our communities. + + Planning is highly topical and features heavily in public debate. Planners are multi- disciplinary professionals who facilitate decision-making and help to balance private, government and community interests to create net future benefit. They engage with communities to develop visions for the future and the change needed over time to achieve the desired future for their city, town or neighbourhood. 2
