1 Purpose of the Challenge: 2017/2018 Toronto Catholic District School Board Skills Competition Cabinet Making Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton 1515 Bloor Street West, Toronto, ON Tuesday, March 7, 2018 To test the competitor s practical skills, knowledge and attention to detail in the fabrication of a piece of Furniture. The competitor will engage in an interesting and challenging project in the woodworking/furniture/cabinet making area. Skills and Knowledge to be tested: To demonstrate skills and knowledge of blueprint reading. Safe use of hand tools, portable power tools and basic machine operations. To work and construct in a safe and competent manner. Build a quality piece of furniture/cabinetry which will include wood joints, and routing. Prepare the project for the finishing stage. A mandatory 5 minute Mock Job interview and analysis of competitor s resume.

3 Safety Safety is a priority at this competition. At the discretion of the judge(s) any competitor can be removed from the competition site for not having the proper safety equipment and/or not acting in a safe manner. 1. It is mandatory for all competitors to wear CSA approved eyewear (including side shields for prescription eyewear). 2. It is mandatory for all competitors to wear CSA approved footwear. 3. Jewellery such as rings, bracelets and necklaces or any items deemed unsafe by the competition judge(s) shall be removed. 4. Proper shop attire is to be worn (no loose straps, baggy sleeves, no shorts), or any item deemed unsafe by the competition judge(s). * Competition judge(s) will have final authority on all matters of safety Job Interview To assist competitors in fully preparing for their eventual job searches and to become valued employees, there is a job interview incorporated into this contest. 6 IMPORTANT IMPORTANT Students must submit a signed copy of the enclosed safety contract. Students will not be allowed to participate in the competition if not submitted. GENERAL SAFETY CONTRACT STUDENTS' RESPONSIBILITIES are to: Keep their work area neat and free of hazards. Take extra care when cutting materials with sharp cutting blades or chisels. Always cut away from your body, especially fingers. Wear safety glasses, avoid loose or baggy clothing, jewelry, bracelets, necklaces etc. Tie loose hair back, roll up sleeves, and tie shoelaces. Keep a safe distance from moving machine parts, i.e. cutting edges, pinch points, entanglement areas, etc. Properly wear personal protective equipment where required and as instructed by the teacher and supervisors. Learn about the safe and correct use of equipment before operating, and only operate tools and equipment that they have been instructed and authorized by the teacher/ supervisor. Use machine guards to prevent access to moving machinery parts. Solicit help with awkward or heavy materials, and with operations or situations not fully understood. Use assistance to lift heavy items. Inform the teacher of any physical limitations that would impede full participation in the competition.

7 Report any hazardous situation or defective equipment to the judge(s). Never leave equipment running unattended, and do not attempt to repair any electrical connections. Report all injuries or illness as a result of the competition to the judge(s). Report to the judge(s) the use of any medication that may result in drowsiness or loss of concentration. concentrate on the work and avoid unnecessary talking and distraction. Do not compromise the safety of others through horseplay or aggressive actions. Ask for assistance from the judge(s) when you are unsure of the proper procedures or health and safety issues. Maintain a safe workplace for yourself and fellow students. CONSEQUENCES FOR IMPROPER ACTION I understand that failure to comply with this agreement may result in injury to myself or others, and that failing to comply with safety procedures may result in my (or the teams) disqualification and removal from the competition.
