2 CITY OF NOME, ALASKA Job Description Museum Director Range: 15 Status: Non-exempt Department: Approved By: to Reports to: City Manager Date: /// ~/ ~ // Supervises: Museum Assistant, Museum Aide and volunteers Summary: Under administrative direction of the City Manager, responsible for management of municipal Museum. Collects, preserves and protects the history of Nome. Performs professional curatorial duties for the Museum s collection of photographs, artifacts, historical documents and related media including video and computer documentation. Serves as resource person for verification of the history of Nome and the region. Administers operation of the Museum, including staff supervision; planning and implementation of programs and exhibitions; budget preparation, and fiscal control; evaluating plans and policies for the Museum. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Makes independent decisions to include supervisory decisions on hiring, firing, guiding and scheduling of staff; budgeting; expenditure decisions; programming decisions; conflict resolution involving visitors and/or staff Actively collects and preserves the history of Nome and the region through the securing of gifts either through direct purchase or by donation, personal interviews, research, etc. Responsible for registration, condition assessment and collections management of the Museum s permanent collections. Obtains museum objects through direct purchase or donation; curates artifacts, including archaeological, ethnological and historical artifacts, photographs and documents; maintains accurate and complete records of all museum items. Researches, develops and installs exhibits. Prepares educational materials for use by the community. Researches and prepares grant applications and proposals for Museum programs; administers grant finds and oversees financial procedures. Assures that activities funded by grants are completed. 3 Designs tours of museum and answers historical questions posed by visitors. Works in conjunction with local tour companies and visiting dignitaries. Works to plan programs, exhibitions and activities to maximize pubic interest in the Museum and enhance Museum programs, services and reputation. Insures that all requests for historical information via , USPS or verbal methods are answered accurately. Assures adequate attention is given to Museum safety and security, including cash handling, premises monitoring, and insures the Museum and building is well maintained. Coordinates Museum activities with other City departments or local businesses and major community events. Assures cooperation with other agencies and personnel to achieve required services and cooperation in program implementation. Participate in maintaining integrity of historical properties owned by the City of Nome. Promotes facility activities through the use of various marketing tools such as composing and forwarding media releases, designing and distributing fliers and brochures to media outlets as well as the community. Oversees the proper implementation of city and department policies and procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned. Standards of Performance: Goals set in the annual budget plan are met. Budget is developed, evaluated and reviewed annually with the City Manager. Money must be properly handled per department and city procedures. Expenditures are monitored to ensure fiscal integrity of the department s overall budget. Insure that exhibits displayed, questions answered and research performed accurately reflect history. Must be extremely trustworthy & honest in order to protect the integrity & security of the museum and its collection. Public and target markets are made aware of facility programs by utilization of the media, brochures, fliers and by public speaking engagements. Must be proficient in the use of personal computers, peripherals and current software. Must be pleasant in dealing with the public. MuseumOirector 2 01/

4 Supervisory Responsibility: Directly supervises up to three employees or regular, part-time, seasonal and trainee status as well as volunteers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, recommending, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience: A combination of five years education and administrative experience required. Bachelor s Degree in Business or Public Administration; Art History, Museum Studies or Anthropology. Experience must include either supervisory and administrative management or museum management. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret historical periodicals, professional journals and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, research papers, press releases and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public. Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and thaw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Other Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of public relations, and ability to solicit public and corporate support for Museum activities. Knowledge of museum practices, including acquisitions, identification, documentation, preservation, and restoration of historic materials; regional cultural history, exploration and settlement of Bering Straits region, Seward Peninsula gold mining activities and Nome history. 5 Ability to: Conceive, plan and construct museum exhibits; restore and maintain artifacts; conduct research; identify, classify and catalog artifacts, specimens, and contemporary material; speak and write effectively; establish and maintain working relationships with the public and with other agencies; perform administrative duties. Possess a valid Alaska Driver s License. A criminal background check is required prior to final hire. Public Relations: Public Relations is an integral part of every City employee s job. In dealing with the donors, scientists, dignitaries, researchers, filmmakers, world media, tourists and most importantly the citizens of None who visit and utilize the Museum, the employee must be courteous, helpful and conduct themselves in a manner which is appropriate for a public servant. Employee must exercise excellent customer service and social skills.
