1 ROLE PROFILE Job Title: Development Tutor 4 Location: The Prince s Trust Centre - Middlesbrough Introduction to The Prince s Trust Youth charity The Prince's Trust gives practical and financial support, developing key workplace skills such as confidence and motivation. It works with 13 to 30 year-olds who are unemployed or at risk of unemployment through underachieving in education. The Prince s Trust is an optimistic and ambitious organisation. The Trust works with around 55,000 young people across the UK delivered through three English regions and offices in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Trust delivers its support to young people through teams of staff, volunteers and delivery partners. Each of the regions and countries has a Director who is supported by a Regional or Country Council, which is made up of nonexecutive volunteers. The Trust supports young people through a range of programmes, and operates a network of centres from where the Fairbridge programme is delivered. The Fairbridge programme is an individually tailored personal development programme for young people aged between 13 and 25. It combines one-to-one support and group activities, delivered by a dedicated team. The programme helps marginalised and excluded young people who face a range of issues and barriers in their lives. It empowers them through a range of positive opportunities and experiences and helps them re-engage with society Reports to: Fairbridge Programme Manager, with day to day supervision from Senior Development Tutor Key Relationships: Fairbridge programme staff in the Centre Programme Support Co-ordinator in the Centre Service providers and delivery partners Head of Adventurous Activities Technical Advisors Central Operations Team 1

2 Other Head Office Functions and Departments as required Accountability: The Development Tutor is accountable for the development of young people through a variety of sessions and courses across a range of mediums. Scale 4 Development Tutors may also be expected to provide leadership by supporting, coaching and mentoring other Development Tutors and volunteers as directed by the Senior Development Tutor. Responsibility: To plan and design engaging Access and Follow On sessions and activities for young people, with a high proportion of adventurous activities To deliver high quality, safe sessions and activities To assist with leading, supporting, coaching and mentoring other Development Tutors and Group Activity Support Volunteers Budget: Responsible for allocated course expenditure including the hire of facilities and accommodation, resources, rations, and other day to-day running costs. Responsible for maintaining and auditing allocated resources, vehicles and facilities in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures and with support from the Senior Development Tutor. Also responsible for managing own expenses within the financial management guidelines and allocated budget and supporting wider team to maximise draw down on relevant programme funding contracts whilst keeping expenditure within agreed limits. Detailed responsibilities: 1. Contribute to the development of the quarterly Fairbridge programme with regular entry points onto the programme (Access Courses) and a balance of Personal, Social and Life skills (Follow On Courses) 2. Ensure delivery complies with the stages and processes outlined in the toolkit, the minimum quality standards and any additional contractual obligations 3. Identify the development needs of young people and design appropriate courses in liaison with the Outreach and Development Workers. Assess and evaluate courses and activities, and modify course design and delivery as appropriate 4. Assist with the sourcing of opportunities and development of relationships with other organisations, or service providers, to deliver a wider range of appropriate activities within the programme 5. Lead the delivery of residential (Access and Follow On) courses to young people. 6. Deliver designated accreditation courses; supporting young people to attain accreditation where possible 7. Build effective relationships with young people and constructively work with young people s behaviour using Fairbridge programme theories of learning 8. Ensure Development Tutors complete Access Course Reports and the relevant sections of young people s Personal Development Plans, and work in partnership with Outreach and Development 2

3 Workers to identify, monitor and evaluate the development needs and progression opportunities of young people. 9. Assist with ensuring effective communication and flows of information between Development Tutors and Outreach and Development Workers 10. Maintain and audit allocated Fairbridge programme equipment, vehicles and facilities in compliance with Adventurous Activities Standard Operating Procedures with support from the Senior Development Tutor. Input into the Fairbridge programme equipment replacement plan by identifying, prioritising and sourcing equipment and facilities within allocated budget 11. Comply with The Prince s Trust health and safety policy by supervising all young people to ensure their welfare and safety is maintained whilst participating in the Fairbridge programme and through promoting a culture of health and safety within the team, carrying out risk assessments on activities 12. Assist with recruitment, training and supervision of volunteers and staff 13. Assist with leading, supporting, coaching and mentoring Development Tutors and Group Activity Support Volunteers, carrying out observations on the practices of more junior Development Tutors, assisting with assessing competence 14. Support the implementation of multiple external funding contracts or initiatives (local and national) to ensure requirements and outputs are achieved 15. Maintain accurate and up to date records, paper and electronic, as required by The Trust or external funding contracts and in line with The Trust s data protection policy 16. Comply with all Prince s Trust young people policies and procedures 17. Carry out other duties as may reasonably be required by The Trust, including deputising as appropriate on activities relevant to area of responsibility and attending all necessary internal/external training courses and management/steering group meetings Reporting responsibilities: To supply information as required by the Senior Development Tutor or Fairbridge Programme Manager. PERSON SPECIFICATION The successful candidate will be experienced in working with young people from The Trust s target group and dealing with challenging behaviour. They must have the ability to facilitate personal and social development of young people, and should be able to demonstrate that they understand the challenges that face disadvantaged young people in their area. They will also have an enthusiasm and passion for the work of The Prince s Trust and a conviction to deliver high positive outcomes for the young people we support. 3

4 Criteria Essential Desirable Skills and Knowledge: Strong understanding of the challenges young people within The Trust s target groups face Ability to effectively develop rapport with young people and establish appropriate relationships Ability to deliver high quality group sessions in four different mediums (e.g. sports, arts, life skills) of which three must be adventurous activities Excellent knowledge of health and safety practices and processes Good planning and organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities Good verbal and non-verbal communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work both independently and as part of a team Ability to work on own initiative to find creative solutions to problems Strong awareness and understanding of equal opportunities and the ability to translate these into effective action Experience: Significant experience of youth work Competencies and Behaviour Experience of facilitating personal and social development of young people, with awareness of issues affecting target group Experience of leading and delivering adventurous activities Experience of leading and delivering non-adventurous activities e.g. dance, drama, sports, arts, music, media, cooking Experience of delivering accredited training courses (such as Sports Leaders Award, John Muir award) IT skills including Word, , Internet Explorer, media packages and use of equipment such as data projector, digital camera, video camera Approachable open minded and value diversity Non-judgemental focus on the potential not the past Inspiring lead by example Empowering enable positive change Passionate absolutely committed to supporting young people Disposition Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required Ability to attend meetings/courses throughout the UK Qualifications Minimum of three NGB qualifications in a range of adventurous activities First Aid qualification with outdoor focus and relevant Knowledge of local provision for disadvantaged young people and the local community Experience of working within a target driven environment Food Hygiene awareness qualification 4
