4 About Global Canopy Global Canopy is an agile and entrepreneurial charity with an outsized impact. Our aim is to end large-scale deforestation, a global problem with huge costs for people and prosperity. We focus on the market forces driving two-thirds of tropical deforestation, for land to produce globallytraded commodities such as beef, soy, palm oil and timber. Our mission is to accelerate progress towards a deforestation-free global economy through improved transparency, innovative finance and strategic communications. We help enable the companies, investors and governments already taking positive action, and shine a light on those that need to do more. 5 About the Trase initiative Trase is a ground-breaking sustainability platform, enabling governments, companies, investors and others to better understand and address the environmental and social impacts linked to their supply chains. It draws on vast sets of production, trade and customs data, for the first time laying bare the flows of globally-traded commodities. 7 About your role - Overview This is a unique opportunity to be at the heart of an international team breaking exciting new ground in the pursuit of more transparent and sustainable supply chains. The role will sit within the Supply Chains programme at Global Canopy, and will also work very closely with Trase staff at the Stockholm Environment Institute, and other collaborating organisations worldwide. new geographies and commodities. We are seeking a Research Associate capable of helping lead the successful implementation of the Trase strategy, including extending Trase to 7

8 About your role - Responsibilities 1) Research and thought leadership (40%) Develop key insights and thought leadership around the sustainability of forest-risk commodity supply chains using Trase data Support development of Trase model in new countries including Indonesia. 2) Strategic planning and implementation of Trase programme (30%) Contribute towards the overall implementation of the Trase strategy, and development of a post 2021 strategy Responsible for development of Trase for new countries and commodities, including palm oil in Indonesia. 3) Engagement and Network Management (30% time) Support development of Trase engagement strategy and workplanning Ensure alignment and coordination with existing engagement and outreach activities among the Trase core institutional partners. Provide Trase demonstrations and introductions to new interested partners and users, including government and private sector Represent Trase internationally, including working closely with key stakeholders to develop and understand applications of Trase to support improved decision-making. Work closely with Trase colleagues at SEI, including the product development manager for Trase, to help deliver a programme of work across the Trase partnership Line manage members of the program team, ensuring they have clear objectives and regular support. 8

9 About you Person specification Essential Masters degree or higher in environmental economics, policy, law or other related degree 5 + years working on sustainability of commodity supply chains, especially regarding forests. Including quantitative analysis and research Critical thinker & thought leader within the sustainable agriculture and deforestation space Experience leading at a multi-disciplinary team working on supply chain sustainability at a senior level Experience in tropical forest countries tackling deforestation in through engagement with private and/or public sector actors, Programme and project management skills, including partnership management Interpersonal and communication skills, able to communicate complex ideas to diverse audiences both orally and in writing. Knowledge & experience of the palm oil industry and related deforestation in South East Asia. Desirable Experience in developing online data tools and decision support systems Fluency in an additional language, preferably Indonesian, Portuguese, or Spanish. 9

10 Salary & benefits Salary: From 40k Nature of contract: The contracted hours are 37.5 per week There may be out of hours working and some travel, for which notice will be given. Base: The post is based at Global Canopy s office in Oxford, England. There is a potential for some flexibility in terms of location (i.e. working remotely for 2 days a week for example). Holidays: 20 days holiday - plus discretionary days between Xmas & New year. Rising to 25 days over first 5 years of service Probation Period: Global Canopy has a standard probationary period of 6 months for posts of this nature. Pension: Global Canopy offers a pension to all employees. Further details will be given to staff when they join.
