8 National Mentoring Month National Mentoring Month (NMM) is the largest-scale mentoring campaign nationwide, culminating each year with the National Mentoring Summit. NMM will reflect on the incredible growth of the mentoring movement, recognize the real life mentoring relationships that are formed and thriving each day, and offer an opportunity to thank the mentors who have inspired us. 10 Key Messaging The NMM Toolkit contains key messages such as: At a time when much of the focus is on what divides us, MENTOR research shows that there is something the majority of Americans agree on: mentoring relationships are powerful tools for connection and are critical to our country s future. Americans are overwhelmingly crossing racial, economic, and other bridges to mentor young people outside their families. Power of Relationships 10

15 Storytelling Repository Personal stories provide points of connection and remind us of the power of relationships to break down otherness, find common ground, and elevate shared humanity. MENTOR created the Storytelling Repository to collect mentoring stories that will be used to help inspire others to become mentors. 15

16 Storytelling Repository Sharing your story is as easy as 1-2-3: 1. Visit 2. Fill out the informational and story fields you can upload your story or type it out in the text box 3. Make sure to include a photo or video to make your story come to life Hit submit and your story is one step closer to inspiring others! 16

17 Updates to the Storytelling Repository New updates will make it even easier to share your story We ve streamlined the submission process Updates will be live later this week Be sure to promote the Storytelling Repository throughout NMM 17

18 Media Outreach Prep Track media outlets that cover mentoring stories and feature articles in support of youth success Send a social media message to reporters who are interested in writing about mentoring and youth. Ask your local/regional outlet for donated airtime or print-ad space for use during National Mentoring Month. Invite media contacts to any special events or activations you are doing in the local community. 18

19 Media Outreach Tips Make it easy for the media outlet Provide the local angle Be the expert voice Include personal stories from the community Write an op-ed/press release on mentoring and submit to several local/regional outlets Ask them to make the call to action! 19

21 Why Elected Officials? Getting to know elected officials in your community can result in building relationships that can support mentoring policy and advocacy. Public platform help provide them talking points to elevate mentoring. Policy change relationships help build policy changes. 21

22 Proclamation Requests Proclamations are how governors and mayors recognize events, people and campaigns in their states and cities. 22

23 Invite Elected Officials to Events and Site Visit Invite your members of Congress, state officials, and local elected leaders to visit mentoring programs or to present awards to outstanding volunteers for their contributions to youth. Ask elected officials to use their platform to engage in mentor recruitment and partner with them after the event or site visit. Use MENTOR s guide to inviting elected officials to events and reach out to us if you need support on creating resources. 23

24 Request Meetings with Elected Officials Bring together your colleagues in the mentoring field in your city or state and meet with your mayor, governor, state official or member of Congress. Collaborate and think about some of the barriers your programs face in addition to their successes and discuss them with elected officials. 24

25 Nominate a Mayor for Mentoring Mayors for Mentoring recognizes the powerful contributions of mayors in supporting the mentoring field. Mayors across the country are scaling quality mentoring initiatives, mobilizing their communities and better equipping young people to succeed. Has your mayor shown incredible leadership in their efforts to expand quality youth mentoring in the community? Nominate them! 25

28 Reasons for Companies to Engage Gain visibility Build staff morale Recognize employee volunteers Inspire other companies to get involved in the mentoring movement 28

29 Share Your Stories Feature employee mentor/mentee stories on social media, company intranet sites, employee newsletter or website Write a blog or co-author an op-ed with a mentoring program about why mentoring is a priority and showcase successes Share social media plans with nonprofit partners and MENTOR and invite them to retweet/share to help elevate your posts 29

30 Support Mentoring Program Efforts Reach out to current partners or new nonprofit programs and ask how you can partner and support their initiatives and events throughout the month. Be sure to share the National Mentoring Month guide with them. 30

31 Help Recruit Mentors Host a mentor fair or brown bag lunch at office showcasing local mentoring programs to employees. employees and/or clients sharing why the company supports mentoring initiatives. Consider announcing a challenge to recruit a specific number of mentors during National Mentoring Month consider leveraging the Mentoring Connector. 31

32 Recognize Employee Mentors Host an event for employees who mentor. Invite your mentoring program partner(s) to share a few words about their work and your partnership. Recognize a few employees who have gone above and beyond as mentors. Be sure to engage mentees where possible! Send a thank you from the CEO or President to employee mentors. Share why mentoring is important to the company and how their service is making a difference both in the workplace and in the community. 32
