Multiple Players No Common Evidence-base Many players involved in addressing workplace absence, employee health, disability prevention and management

Which Evidence Matters? Sources matter

What is a systematic review? Individual studies vary in research quality and may have contradictory results A goal of a systematic review is to gather all research literature on a given topic with specific inclusion/ exclusion criteria Two or more researchers independently assess the quality of the research design, and quantify the level of strength, confidence and/or consistency of the aggregated results of the included studies Report results based on the scientific merit of the included studies

What is a best evidence synthesis of systematic reviews? A goal of a best evidence synthesis is to gather all systematic reviews on a given topic with specific inclusion/ exclusion criteria Two or more researchers independently assess the methodological quality of included systematic reviews, to determine level of strength or confidence, and consistency regarding the aggregated results and conclusions Report results based on the scientific merit of the quality of the systematic reviews included

Risk factors contributing to work absence: A comprehensive literature search

What are workplace factors? Physical environment - climate adjustment, equipment design, or physical plant design Work organization & culture - design of work including demand levels, job control, task rotation, training, communication, workplace relationships Organizational arrangements & stakeholder relations - policies and procedures for disability case management, occupational health services, and systems of coordination, control and accountability across multiple stakeholders Financial & employment contracts - disability prevention and return to work through compensation and benefit policies, safety incentives, and performance rewards

Modifiable Workplace Factors Evidence across health conditions Strong Moderate Limited Low social support Non full-time work Absenteeism tolerance Low job satisfaction Poor quality leadership Time to Low supervisory support Low worker control Psychological demands Job strain physical demands Low job control Low fairness Low managerial involvement treatment Reorganizational stress White M, Wagner S. et al. 12 Modifiable Workplace Factors Evidence across health conditions Inconsistent Compensation and insurance level Intervention Approaches Insufficient Workplace physical environment Job stress Staff training Goodwill in workplace Union involvement Health systems factors Employer barriers Workplace staffing Treatment Communication

Valued Activities Metrics for project success and baseline Collaboration (genuine mutual interest /open reflection and willingness to change/ direct impact on project direction) Purpose/ Research question / Inclusion/ Exclusion (problem identification, clarification, proposed action) Search strategy development (search terms, refinement of inclusion/ exclusion criteria) Review of list of article titles (initial search) Instrument refinement (academic/stakeholder) Read articles prior to review (based on title) X

Valued Activities Highlight areas of interest within selected articles (importance, relevance, missing) Abstraction table (category review/ refinement) Categorization of factors Model development (understandability/ usability / relevance /likelihood of its use) Stakeholder Report (understandability/ usability / relevance /likelihood of its use) Project evaluation Presentations review
