5 The MBS Self-Reliance Training Model What is an MBS Self Reliance group? A person earns a Masters of Business of the Streets MBS when they join an MBS self-reliance group of 5-15 people with a desire to start and/or grow a small business. They earn the MBS by participating in 15 weekly classes led by a local certified Success Ambassador. Each week they learn new business concepts, set weekly commitments and report on how they implemented last week s goals. After the 15-week class session, if they achieve all of the requirements and are approved, they receive a certificate from Interweave Solutions, an International organization. The graduates then set a schedule to meet regularly to act as a support group to solve local business problems such as garbage in the street or delinquency. They hold each other accountable for ongoing commitments and they bring in guest speakers and resources from the community as needed. Important tips for Success Ambassadors As a Success Ambassador your goal is to help move people from poverty to prosperity through the self-reliance MBS groups you will organize, facilitate and grow. 6 What are your goals as you facilitate your MBS self-reliance groups? 1. Learn the 6 Ps of business: Keep it simple. Start with the basic learning outline of the 6ps of business; Plan, Product, Process, Promotion, Pricing and Paperwork. Each discussion is based on this outline. So for those that have no money, promotion may mean finding used cardboard and borrowing a marker. For others it may mean setting up a website. Each person approaches the principle from where they are at in skills, reading levels, experience and resources. Make sure your group is taking action and measuring their progress. Commit to your personal, group and saving promises each meeting and report on your progress at the beginning of the following meeting. Help those who encounter barriers on their journey to self-reliance. 2. Create 3 plans for self-reliance: The MBS recognizes that a business in the street or village doesn t exist in a vacuum. Family challenges such as alcoholism or health and community issues like delinquency and garbage must be addressed in a local context. Each MBS graduate needs to develop a home plan and a community action plan to help the overall business community grow. 3. Learn how to facilitate with FAMA: Case studies are a helpful business-learning tool. However, necessity entrepreneurs sometimes find that reading is difficult. The MBS self-reliance program uses case studies methodology through simple presentation images. The group hears the situation, sees the images and discusses solutions to how to resolve the problems. Leadership, confidence and analysis are all learned without depending on the written word. To learn more about how to facilitate a group with fama follow the link below: 4. Maintain the group support model: Local micro business owners should support and hold each other accountable within their MBS groups. Many micro businesses have no support system or local chamber of commerce to represent their interest. After receiving their certificate, MBS graduates should continue to meet regularly to set goals, hold each other accountable and resolve local concerns. 4 interweavesolutions.org

Success Ambassadors and City Directors will work closely to determine financial systems and any additional fees (if any) to be collected from the students or collected from business, churches, governments or other organizations or donors paying for Success Ambassador services. A two part receipt record should be kept, one receipt goes to the participant as proof they paid and the other is kept as record of payment. 14 Success Ambassador Resources MEASURE YOUR PERFORMANCE As a Success Ambassador you are a representative of a high quality international program Interweave Solutions. You are expected to uphold the mission, vision and values as described for you in page 2 of this manual. Interweave Solutions wants you to succeed and we are constantly creating new training tools and bringing you up to date training to enhance your MBS business. You can find the latest up to date trainings and information on our website at interweavesolutions.org The following two pages are meant to help you track your group participants progress as well as your own. Here is how these pages work: MBS PARTICIPANT PRE & POST ASSESSMENT The participant pre & post assessment form is a form that helps you track the efficiency and progress of what your groups learned during the time you facilitated the initial lessons. You will have each of your MBS group participants fill out a pre-assessment at the beginning of your group and a postassessment at the end of the 14th MBS lesson and before graduation. Notice that we did not say at the end of your group. This is because your MBS groups can last an indefinite amount of time, depending on many factors and including the willingness, commitment, need and interests of the group participants themselves. Remember that your job as a Success Ambassador is to start self-reliance groups that will help people start or improve their own businesses as well as work on becoming self-sufficient. As a Success Ambassador your job is to organize the creation of the groups and lead the initial MBS lessons. After the participants graduate from this initial MBS certification process they are expected to continue to act as a sort of chamber of commerce meaning they will act as a long-term support for each other and continue to meet indefinately for months, years or a lifetime if they decide to. Because your participation in the groups you create is only temporary it is important for you to create a solid foundation that can sustain the long-term growth of the groups you create for years to come. After the group s graduation remember that your job then becomes to regularly follow up to make sure they are continuing to grow and meet. Following this process Success Ambassadors can make a meaningful difference in moving a large number of individuals from poverty to prosperity and improve their communities significantly. At the same time Success Ambassadors can earn a living and build a legacy for themselves and their families. SUCCESS AMBASSADOR ASSESSMENT The Success Ambassador assessment is the form you as a Success Ambassador will use to measure your own performance while guiding your MBS groups. It is important to constantly improve and measure the quality of your MBS services in order to build a quality MBS program where you can be successful. Use this form regularly and ask for feedback from your participants. 12 interweavesolutions.org
