The international crisis that has hit economy activity around the world since 2007 has raised fundamental questions about the international economic order, and has challenged assumptions about organizational design. For example, international economic liberalization combined with advances in information and communication technologies mean that companies do not need to be large in scale in order to compete internationally. So, developments such as this have served to provide insight that there is no single, effective way of designing and managing an organization. Therefore, the practical importance of organizational design makes it both a critical tool and an intellectually challenging area of study.
