YOU RE ALL THAT AND A BAG OF CHIPS YOUR ALL THAT AND A BAG OF CHIPS IF IT WERE EASY EVERYONE WOULD BE DOING IT! January 2018 If it were Easy D or P E E V R E I L S O H P Our program was developed to celebrate administrative nursing leaders who are supporting themselves and others. One of the keys is your own development through your commitment to YOU, Quality, and Leadership to others. Remember if it were ease.everyone would be doing it! 1

Objectives Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Discuss the evolving role of the LTC Nurse Administrative Leader. 2. Describe Management v. Leadership. 3. Celebrate OUR Successes by Recognizing our Challenges. Long Term Care is Complicated! Our Profession is Complex and Unique 2

A Tall Order To do what we do is unique. The Long Term Care Professional Nurse Administrator and Leadership role is a unusual one as it requires solid skills such as proficient regulatory knowledge, strong interpersonal skills, ability to multi-task, success in interfacing with finance, understanding principles of risk management, usage of software, and a level of emotional intelligence that supports excellence in Human Resources to develop and stabilize your team not to mention to be a great nurse. An interesting Recipe First we need a pinch of E.I. \ Emotional Intelligence is the capacity of individuals to recognize their own, and other people s emotions, to discern between different feelings and label them appropriately, to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior, and to manage and/or adjust emotions to adapt to environments or achieve one s goals. From Wikipedia 3

Then we need to add consistency... Leadership is not a Light Switch Leader On/Off (not) Ben Roethlisberger, a professional athleite states that the measure of a true leader is how they conduct themselves 24/7, not just during a winning touchdown drive or a goalline stance. Leadership is NOT something that gets switched off because the game clock expires or the survey is over... Leadership Switch Examples Examples ON Makes rounds daily Uses common pleasantries Speaks to all encountered during rounds Demonstrates consistency Remains fair and firm Treats others everyday as they would like to be Examples OFF Stops rounds after exit Makes little effort to be pleasant Does not speak to all unless visitors in center Is not consistent, decisions based on needs and wants 4

Then add patience and kindness Challenges are Many We must examine how to achieve: 1. Personal Growth, 2. New Rules & Regulations, 3. Anticipated services needs, 4. Appropriate staffing patterns, 5. Support delivery of QoC & QoL, 6. Cultural diversity related changes, 7. Person centered and individualized care, and 8. Individual personal and team work life balance, etc. Add some important considerations 5

Nurse Administrators knows that 16 There are three keys to PI: Continuous study and improvement of processes to improve outcomes and prevent issues, Testing of new approaches to remedy root causes of persistent/systemic problems and barriers, and PI can make good quality even better. Nurse Administrators consider the impact of a. Supervision b. Leadership c. Leadership Styles d. Environmental Factors e. Sphere of Influence f. Mentorship Confirming Supervision Supervision is the act or the process of directing a person or a group of people. act or instance of directing, managing, or oversight 6

Recognizing Leadership Leadership is both a research area and a practical skill, regarding the ability of an individual or organization to "lead" or guide other individuals, teams, or entire organizations. Sphere of Influence A "sphere of influence" is a metaphor to express how far the effects of some power spreads. The sphere of influence of the head teacher would be their school, while the sphere of influence of a super power (eg the USA) is global. What is your sphere of influence? 7
