General Summary of Function/Purpose of Position Perform transportation engineering functions as a professional in the specialized field of bridge load rating analysis. Page 1

Duty 1 General Summary of Duty 1 % of Time 75 Perform load rating analysis of new and rehabilitated highway structures and review load ratings completed by other engineers. Review bridge plans and gather engineering data needed to model the bridge Review inspection reports to determine how much deterioration to consider in the analysis Perform structural analysis of the bridge using AASHTOWare Bridge Rating (BrR) software, other bridge analysis software, spreadsheets, and/or hand calculations Review analysis output for reasonableness and perform quality checks as necessary Document assumptions used in analysis Prepare summary of results Duty 2 General Summary of Duty 2 % of Time 10 Review requests for bridge overload permits Review existing bridge analyses and make adjustments as appropriate Analyze bridges for proposed overload permit Make recommendations for approval or denial of permit and/or determine restrictions necessary to approve permit Page 2

Decide how much deterioration, if any, to include in the load rating analysis. Proper application of engineering theory. Determine if analysis output is reasonable. These decisions affect the results of the load rating analysis and may impact movement of truck traffic on the bridge network. 17. This position performs load ratings of highway bridges in Michigan. 24. Indicate specifically how the position s duties and responsibilities have changed since the position was last reviewed. None 25. What is the function of the work area and how does this position fit into that function? The Bridge Management Section is responsible for the management of MDOT's trunkline bridges and oversight of the State's highway bridges, including local agency structures. The section is responsible for ensuring compliance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS), including load rating, inspection and asset management. Load ratings are necessary to satisfy Federal regulations as well as ensure the safety of the travelling public. This position performs load rating analyses under general guidelines. Page 6

7 26. What are the minimum education and experience qualifications needed to perform the essential functions of this position? EDUCATION: Possession of a bachelor of science degree in Civil Engineering. Classes in Structural Engineering is highly desirable. EXPERIENCE: 9 level: No specific amount or type is required. 10 level: One year of professional experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 9. P11 level: Two years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 10. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain favorable public relations and work in a team environment. Ability to utilize existing computerized technology in the completion of assigned objectives. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Possession of a valid driver s license.
