Course Description Surveys the principles and practices in managing personnel; human resource planning, recruiting, selection, training; development of personnel policies; government regulation including EOC, OSHA, wage-and-hour laws; introduces labor relations and collective bargaining. 2. Course Objectives Explain the various components of human resource management Identify current HR issues Analyze and get clearer understanding and increased knowledge of both manager and employee rights and responsibilities Demonstrate the ability to think outside of the HR box, be creative, and have fun 3. 2 University Library Find the GGU Library Home Page at There are several databases available through the Golden Gate University Library for students to conduct research on various topics. Remote (off campus) access to the databases requires your last name and student ID# (located on the front of your ID card). Be sure to type in ALL 7 digits, including the starting 0. Course Requirements, Student Responsibilities, Evaluations Oral Presentation of an HRM subject matter that will exhibit a thoroughly researched topic. No duplicate topics will be allowed. Topics must be approved by the 3rd class session. Any equipment request must be made two weeks prior to the presentation. This presentation will be 15 minutes in length, have a 5 minute question-answer session for fellow students, use appropriate visual aids (3 minimum), and feedback will be provided by both your fellow students and instructor. Late papers will not be accepted. This assignment will have a minimum of six pages and not more than ten pages, typed and double spaced, using a font not larger than 12 points. 100 points Case Study written assignment based on end of chapter examples. No duplicate case studies will be allowed. The case study must be approved by the 3 rd class session. This written assignment will be no less than three pages and no more than six, and appropriately referenced with your sources. Be creative with this assignment and go beyond the questions asked in the text. Late papers will not be accepted. This assignment will be typed and double spaced, using a font not larger than 12 points. 50 points Web Enhanced Mid Term Exam combination of T/F, multiple choice, matching questions, and an essay will be given. There will be no class for this day. 150 points Homework Assignments - consist of a 2-page essay on a Human Resources topic. A late submission of any weekly assignment will not be accepted. There are 4 homework assignments worth 25 points each. 100 points On-Line Threaded Discussions consist of online discussion regarding the assigned chapter. There are 4 such discussions each worth 25 points. 100 points Attendance / Participation Your absence will impact your participation in class, and being present does not automatically give you credit for this component. Therefore, each student is encouraged to actively participate in all class discussions. 80 points

3 Article Search Students are encouraged to research pertinent and timely HR news articles. Copies must be made for each student in the class, and a brief oral presentation (5 minutes) of why this particular article has impacted your HR perspective. There will be a limit of two article searches per student. 20 points (10 points for each article) 6. Course Procedure You will have assigned reading to be done prior to each class, including the first class. You will actively participate in class discussions. You will submit all assignments as indicated. Late assignments will not be accepted. You will have a mid-term exam. 7. Course Evaluation You will have the opportunity to evaluate my teaching KSA s at the end of the term. 8. Grading Policy Grade A B C D F Skills Contributions are prompt, timely, relevant, self-initiated; remarks are raised freely on all assignments throughout the course; there is no attempt to dominate conversation. Information regarding The Americans with Disabilities Acts and GGU s policies and services can be found at: Instructor Bio Ronald M.A. Demerin graduated with BA in Speech from the University of the Philippines, and a Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language from Sonoma State University. I began my professional career in academia as a college instructor at the De La Salle University. I then went on to technical writing, training and development with various NASA contractors in Houston, Texas. I earned my MS in Human Resource Management from Golden Gate University and began my career in HR. I held a couple of director s position in the corporate environment. I returned to the Bay Area and my social advocacy roots and currently work with The Spanish Speaking Unity Council of Alameda County (The Unity Council), a non-profit social services group based in Oakland, as the Director of Human Resources. I have also taught undergraduate Business Communications, Strategic Planning, and HR courses at National American University in Rapid City, South Dakota. 12.
