1 Lead Carver (1) One (1) Independent Contractor position is available for the totem pole project work based on a grant funded apprentice / mentor carving program. Please note, this is not full-time work. Contracts are for the work of a 40-foot totem pole carving. Summary of Contract Opportunity Works under the supervision of the Project Manager and Master Carver to shape and interpret designs according to project drawings, models if utilized, for the creation of a 40-foot in length totem pole. The Lead Carver must be willing to work with and supervise the Mentor and Apprentice Carvers, be willing to work with students as assigned, and to interact with visiting school classes to explain and interpret traditional arts, the culture, the history and the Tlingit clans of the area. Interest, knowledge and experience with traditional carving and culture preferred. Knowledge or familiarity with Tlingit language helpful. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Under the guidance of the Project Lead and Master Carver, the Lead Carver will work both outside and indoors, with power and hand tools, to rough out, shape, finalize, paint and prepare the totem pole to be erected in Douglas, Alaska. Will provide training to the Mentor and Apprentice Carvers. Will maintain a safe and secure working area, both indoors and out, and will interact with visiting groups, discussing area history and Tlingit culture. Qualifications Requires involved proficiency in traditional Tlingit carving, especially involving totem poles. Includes knowledge of Tlingit culture, stories, and ability to relate positively to school and other visiting groups. Includes the ability to work in a team, work independently, supervise and work with apprentices, work with students and other volunteers, and to follow the guidance of the project leaders, be trainable, be reliable, and to help meet the goals of the project.
