1 JOB DESCRIPTION Title of Post CHIEF TECHNICIAN - Lighting Centre The Sands Centre (Arts & Events) 1. PURPOSE OF JOB 1.1 To be responsible for the planning and implementation of all technical requirements for the entertainments and events programme. 1.2 To be responsible for the reactive/planned maintenance and technical operation of the Centre. 2. RESPONSIBLE TO: Technical Stage Manager, Arts and Events Manager 3. RESPONSIBLE FOR: Casual Crew, touring road crews, occasional subcontractors. 4. DECISION MAKING 4.1 All aspects of the technical department, in the absence of the Technical Stage Manager. 5. RESPONSIBILITY FOR ASSETS 5.1 Lighting and sound equipment plus any other technical items, theatre and nontheatre. 6. MAIN ACTIVITIES 6.1 To ensure that adequate technical information is obtained from visiting companies and events organisers, and that proposed events are technically suitable to the Centre. 6.2 To implement the planning of stage formats and technical requirements for events under the control of the Centre. 6.3 To install power, set up and operate computerised theatre-style lighting, PA and other systems for concerts, promotions, exhibitions, conferences and functions as and when required. 6.4 To ensure that visiting companies comply with the Centre's notes, technical and licensing regulations and Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.

2 6.5 To be responsible for the day to day work schedules, safety and operations of the Centre's technicians. 6.6 To ensure that the technical equipment and areas are properly maintained, operated and secured and are kept in a tidy and safe manner in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act To be responsible for the annual maintenance of the Centre's ancillary installations such as telephones, PA, radios, alarms, etc. 6.8 To ensure that staff rotas for all entertainment events are completed. 6.9 To carry out new instillation work for, as well as maintenance of, the buildings electrical systems and work on an annual maintenance programme for such systems To ensure that there are always adequate stocks of electrical and ancillary consumables and to operate a stock control system To install the Centre s ancillary installations such as telephones PA, radios and alarms etc To carry out any other day-to-day electrical maintenance within the building as and when necessary To operate a daily maintainance and works diary To instruct and conduct the building of sets, barriers, stages and seating in line with current Health & Safety regulations To carry out your duties with due regard to Carlisle Leisure Ltd s standing orders and financial regulations To carry out your duties with due regard to Carlisle Leisure Ltd s Health and Safety Policy and Health & Safety at Work Act To carry out such duties and responsibilities as may reasonably be directed by the Technical Stage Manager, the Arts, Entertainments and Events Manager, or his/her Managers. 7. SPECIAL FEATURES 7.1 Previous experience in a similar environment with a good working knowledge of theatre lighting/sound and maintenance issues is desirable. 7.2 Previous experience of managing staff, equipment and resources in a technical capacity is desirable. 7.3 Relevant technical/electrical qualifications and knowledge of Health & Safety at Work Act 1974/Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 is desirable. 7.4 The successful applicant for the post will be able to work at heights.

3 8. HEALTH & SAFETY 8.1 Take appropriate action to remedy any defects or deficiencies reported to them by employees under their control, contractors, and users of the Centre in order to maintain safe working conditions and not to expose any person to an unacceptable degree of risk. 8.2 To attend regular staff training sessions as set out in the GLL generic training plan and in the Centre s specific training plan. 8.3 Implement the company health and safety policy and procedures within their area of control ensuring that all statutory requirements are met. 8.4 Adhere to established Safe Working Procedures, NOP and EAP and avoid taking actions that could create unnecessary health and safety risks, ie horseplay. 8.5 Ensure that all accidents and near misses are recorded and reported, and that all reportable injuries are reported under RIDDOR. 9. CONDITIONS OF SERVICE 9.1 The successful applicant will be required to provide an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service before taking up the post. 9.2 You are required to maintain the statutory qualification(s) necessary to perform the duties that you are employed for, and to attend training as applicable to your employment. 9.3 GLL requires that staff should not undertake additional employment where that work is connected to the statutory functions of the organisation and would conflict with or be detrimental to the organisations interest or in competition to the organisation or the Centre as determined by GLL. 9.4 Normal working week is 5 days, average 39 hours per week, and will include weekends, evenings and Bank Holiday working. 9.5 Due to the seasonal nature of the work, it will be necessary for the Postholder to do additional hours over and above the contracted hours and will be paid at normal time. Overtime will be paid at flat rate after 39 hours. Special enhanced rates are payable for various tasks. These will be negotiated on the individual events for which this may apply. A time off in lieu system is also in operation. 9.6 Salary scale: xxxxxxxx currently xxxxx to xxxxx per annum. 9.7 Subject to any future decision of GLL, the post is based at The Sands Centre. 9.8 The annual leave year is 1 January to 31 December, and will be granted in accordance with the following:

5 PERSON SPECIFICATION POST TITLE: THEATRE ELECTRICIAN/CHIEF TECHNICIAN POST NO: All criteria are stated as ESSENTIAL (E) or DESIRABLE (D) Criteria Competency Education, Qualifications and Training NEBOSH General Certificate (D) or IOSH Managing Safely Certificate (D) Educated to GCSE or equivalent level (E) Previous Technical & production management experience (E) Qualified Electrician (E) Further qualifications in technical or related production discipline (D) Experience and Knowledge Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work (E) Health and Safety training (E) Previous experience of computerised lighting systems (E) Sound and lighting rigging and operation (E) Practical experience working in a theatre, events venue or concert hall (E) Skills and Abilities Able to set and work to budgets (E) Ability to delegate / organise workloads for crew & subcontractors (E) Able to work at heights( E) Personal Qualities and Special Circumstances Must be a self-motivator and able to work as part of a team (E) Communication, Team Leader skills and the ability to deal with customers are essential A flexible approach to work.
