2 Vacancy Information Pack Job Description Job Title: Location: Reward Package: Post holder is line managed by: Post duration: Head of Research (12-Month Fixed Term Contract) Granta Park, Nr Cambridge Competitive, plus benefits Director of Research 12-Month Fixed Term Contract, or on return on the post holder The Research Team at Alzheimer s Research UK is responsible for delivering on the charity s principal remit of funding world-class research to ultimately defeat dementia. Alzheimer s Research UK is funding dementia research through a growing portfolio of grant schemes and strategic initiatives within the UK and internationally. The Research team has expertise in biomedical dementia research, develops innovative research initiatives and organises one of the largest dementia research conferences, while managing all aspects of the funding process. The Research team also interacts with a range of different stakeholders and partners within the UK and internationally, and proactively seeks new opportunities to fulfil its remit. For success, the Research team must be closely aligned and interact fully with all other teams at Alzheimer s Research UK. The Head of Research will work closely with the Head of Strategic Initiatives, Director of Research and Chief Scientific Officer to play a leading role in the implementation and delivery of ARUK s research strategy and grant funding activities and programmes, and in the successful running of Research team operations. The Head of Research will also represent the Research team internally and ARUK externally. Main tasks of role: 1. Implementation and delivery of ARUK s research strategy through its response-mode grant funding activities Oversee operations of ARUK s response-mode grant funding activities, with particular emphasis on the funding mechanisms reviewed by the Grant Review Board Oversee operations of ARUK s co-funding activities through external partnerships and collaborations Lead on the development of any response-mode and partnership schemes Represent ARUK externally on co-funding partnerships Support the Director of Research in landscape mapping and the development of ARUK s research strategy 2. Research team operations Co-lead operational and financial planning for the Research team with the Head of Strategic Initiatives Lead the research grant and knowledge teams on all operational processes, with support from the Director of Research

3 Line-manage and oversee a team consisting of a Research Knowledge Manager, a Research Knowledge Officer, two Research Grants Officers and a Research Team Executive 3. Post-award portfolio analysis and impact Oversee the collection, curation and analysis of reports and data related to ARUK s research portfolio and impact Contribute to ARUK-wide impact work in collaboration with the Science, Media and Engagement and Policy and Public-Affairs teams. Lead the Research impact initiative. 5. Internal and external representation Ensure the Research team provides necessary support to other ARUK departments as required. This could include data, information, scientific opinion or the delivery of specific funding mechanisms. Share external representation opportunities with the Director of Research and Chief Scientific Officer Support the Science, Media and Engagement team as a media spokesperson 6. Other duties Lead on the development and delivery of a strategic programme around reproducibility in research Contribute to the development of new strategic projects/initiatives to position ARUK as leaders/facilitators in dementia research Undertake any other relevant duties and projects delegated by the Director of Research in line with the responsibilities of the post.

We are a non-branched charity at an exciting stage of expansion and development. Our friendly, busy and dynamic office is based in Granta Park, Great Abington, Cambridge. We offer the following benefits 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, pro-rated for new starters, part-time and annualised hour employees. Option to buy up to 5 additional days leave per year, pro-rated for new starters, part-time and annualised hour employees. For every 3, 6 and 9 years worked, employees will receive 1 additional day s leave (loyalty days) which will be added to their annual entitlement, pro-rated for part-time and annualised hour employees. Standard 37.5 hour working week, with a flexible start time of between 7.30am and 9.30am and a corresponding finish between 4pm and 6pm each day. 5% employer contribution of your annual salary into the pension scheme.
