3 What Is The MGEU? The Manitoba Government and General Employees Union (MGEU) is a group of working people who have joined together to bargain better wages, benefits and working conditions and to build a better life for themselves and other workers across Manitoba and Canada.

4 What Is The MGEU? MGEU is the largest union in Manitoba with over 41,000 members 15,000 civil servants working for the Province in various departments in a wide range of jobs 26,000 broader public sector not government but largely funded by government Crown Corporations (MPI, Liquor, Lotteries ) Colleges and universities Health Care hospitals, community support, personal care homes Range of community-based social service agencies

5 What Does The MGEU Do? Job #1: We negotiate collective agreements with your employer Covering your wages, benefits, working conditions, etc. We get your priorities at proposal meetings Staff negotiators and your elected leadership bargain best agreement they can with employer You vote to accept it or not

6 What Does The MGEU Do? Job #2: We monitor your employer s compliance with the contract If an employer does something that contradicts the contract, workplace policies or legislation, we meet with them to get them to stop At RRC we are committed to trying to problem solve through discussion as a first step This may involve the formal grievance procedure in your contract

7 What Does The MGEU Do? Job #3: We represent and advocate for you If you have been denied your rights at work If you are being disciplined by the employer, we will go with you to that meeting, take notes and make sure you are treated with respect We investigate all disciplinary situations to determine if they are warranted and appropriate If not we seek to have them reduced or dropped

8 What Does The MGEU Do? In addition we Identify and respond to workplace issues e.g. safety and health, respect Lobby and campaign to strengthen legislation and government action impacting our members and working people in Manitoba e.g. funding public services, understaffing in health care, overcrowding in correctional facilities

9 Financing What We Do Union dues from members are the sole source of financing for everything the union does At 1.25% of wages, MGEU dues are among the lowest in Manitoba Wages Annual Dues $25,000/year $313 $35,000/year $438 $45,000/year $563 $55,000/year $688

10 Area Councils Meet monthly, bi-monthly All members can attend, Local Table Officers vote Focus on Area/regional issues Elect reps to Standing Committees and Area Director to MGEU Board of Directors

11 Winnipeg and region Working Together Areas Divided into two MGEU Areas according to workplace/operation, including, but not limited to, the following: Area 6 Social Service agencies Health Care including Home Care Area 7 Colleges and Universities Government agencies Crown Corporations Civil Service

12 Working Together Convention Highest decision-making authority in MGEU Biennial general meeting every two years with 300+ delegates elected by Locals based on size All Provincial Board members also attend Votes on resolutions passed at all levels of union on key matters such as budget, policy, constitution/bylaw amendments, campaigns Elects Provincial Officers (President and 4 VPs)
