1 THE INVESTMENT ASSOCIATION UNDERSTANDING SYSTEMS AND CONTROLS (SYSC) IN INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT FIRMS 23 NOVEMBER 2016 A practical one day course on SYSC for employees working within investment management, or in irms providing support services. Key Learning Objectives: Be aware of the SYSC rules that govern a firm s business and how the SYSC framework has developed, in particular in relation to managing compliance, internal audit and financial crime Explore the essential systems and controls required in the oversight of outsourcing Understand senior management arrangements in relation to SYSC, such as rules to mitigate risk-taking and misconduct Consider how areas of risk are managed by the application of effective systems and controls Understand the purpose of Conflicts Policy and Conflicts Register in respect of SYSC, and also senior management arrangements In association with BROWNING TREASURY

2 Background: The programme covers essential, within Investment Management, which govern firms arrangements and compliance with regulation. It will help delegates understand the importance of SYSC in relation to how firms manage their business e.g. in respect of risk taking, conflicts of interest and outsourcing. The course will also consider necessary senior management arrangements, which affect policies and controls in relation to remuneration and misconduct. The course is highly interactive, enabling delegates to get real value from it and support with aspects of SYSC that they find particularly challenging. To assist with the learning process, case studies are used throughout. Who should attend? The course is delivered at an introductory to intermediate level and appropriate for anyone who needs to improve their understanding of Controls, including senior management arrangements. This will include staff with direct responsibility/ accountabilities, including executives, non-executive directors and senior managers, and also supporting staff and those that provide services to investment management companies.
