3 The Organization Prince s Charities Canada (Prince s Trust Canada) transforms the lives of Canadians who are facing challenges or transition through three core programs: entrepreneurship training for transitioning Canadian Armed Forces members and veterans, job training and opportunities for unemployed young people, and revitalizing Indigenous languages. We bring people together to bridge gaps and address complex issues that result in brighter futures for Canadians. Prince s Trust Canada (PTC) is headquartered in Toronto and delivers programs with community-based organizations and corporate and academic institution partners in Toronto and other locations such as Winnipeg, Calgary, Ottawa, Halifax, Regina and St John s. This is an exciting time for Prince s Trust Canada. Founded in 2011 as Prince s Charities Canada, PTC is a registered Canadian Charity that is about to embark on a new phase of growth as part of the global network of The Prince s Trust, the UK s leading youth charity. The Prince s Trust Group is a global network of social entrepreneurs in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Barbados, Jordan, Greece and India, created by HRH The Prince of Wales. PTC s vision is to enable many more Canadians to achieve their potential, especially those who are facing life challenges or transition. PTC s ambition is to deliver more tangible impact through high-quality programs, working in collaboration with a growing network of supporters. The small but mighty staff team of twelve are very committed and passionate about the vision, working with partner organizations and volunteers across the country. While PTC will be undertaking a new strategic planning process this year as it joins PT s global network, it will continue to deepen its work within the three core program areas. Core programs: Prince s Operation Entrepreneur (POE): Developed as a program of Prince s Charities Canada in 2012 to address a gap in entrepreneurial resources for transitioning military, Prince s Operation Entrepreneur (POE) is the only program of its kind in Canada. POE offers veterans the education, tools and resources they need to build confidence, develop networks and start their own successful businesses. Those who have served in Canada s military as a first career are relatively young (age 41), skilled and desiring a new role in life an occupation, a purpose and a new civilian mission. 3

4 But many of them face challenges in the transition to civilian life. Entrepreneurship including everything from self-employment, franchise ownership and freelance work, to buying an existing business, starting one from scratch, or acting as an independent contractor provides an attractive option for many leaving the military to build on the skills they developed in service and focus on their new mission: their own business success, and creating a new role as a member of their new community. POE helps members of the military community all along the continuum of entrepreneurship. For those exploring entrepreneurship and self-employment as a second career option, we offer one-day workshops at bases across Canada. For those with a solid idea or have just launched their venture, we offer intensive, week-long business boot camps to dramatically move their businesses forward. For all veteran entrepreneurs, we offer Ongoing Support, including short-term business coaching by our three part-time Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, online learning modules, pro bono legal services, regular webinars, networking events and the Canadian Veteran Business Directory and its accompanying BuyVeteran campaign. All services are available to veterans at no cost, in both official languages. Many transitioning personnel who have been medically released from service, including those with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and operational stress injuries, are drawn to entrepreneurship. POE is part of the solution for these individuals as they move into a second career that is a good fit with their experience, abilities and the flexibility they need. In fact, over 60% of our seven-day business boot camp participants to date have been medically released. POE is supported by the federal government, corporate sponsors, foundations and individual donors. Get into: Get Into is a highly effective youth employment program, first developed by The Prince s Trust in the UK, which is now scaling up in Canada. Get Into is delivered in partnership with employers and community collaborators who provide training by qualified professionals. It aims to build up a young person s skill set, improve their communication skills, and boost their confidence, ultimately leading them into paid and meaningful employment. The program maximizes direct employment outcomes by engaging employers from the outset in development and delivery. Get Into is a proven model with over ten years of success in the UK demonstrating positive outcomes. 4

5 In 2018, Get Into is underway in Calgary, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Hamilton, and Toronto, with long-term plans to expand and reach young people across Canada. Get Into is supported by national corporate partners and local foundations. Indigenous Languages Initiatives: Prince s Trust Canada supports Indigenous communities in their efforts to revitalize and protect their endangered languages, helping to reinforce a sense of culture, identity, and belonging. As an example of some of our work, we have partnered with various organizations to produce and publish children s books written in 12 languages including Inuktitut and Cree (Plains, Swampy, Woods). An accompanying app was created to allow children and their parents to follow along while listening to an Elder narrate the stories. In partnership with the Manitoba Children s Hospital, Prince s Trust Canada published bespoke children s books in three Indigenous languages with a health care focus distributed through Pediatricians. The series of Indigenous Language Initiatives are extending in 2018 with new projects supported by Canadian Heritage, and a planning process underway will include the creation of a five-year strategy and plan for this program area.
