1 UN VOLUNTEER DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENT ZWER Climate Change Officer The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that promotes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. Volunteerism can transform the pace and nature of development and it benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for volunteerism globally, encouraging partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing volunteers.in most cultures volunteerism is deeply embedded in long-established, ancient traditions of sharing and support within the communities. In this context, UN Volunteers take part in various forms of volunteerism and play a role in development and peace together with co-workers, host agencies and local communities.in all assignments, UN Volunteers promote volunteerism through their action and conduct. Engaging in volunteer activity can effectively and positively enrich their understanding of local and social realities, as well as create a bridge between themselves and the people in their host community. This will make the time they spend as UN Volunteers even more rewarding and productive. The capital Harare lies at an altitude of 1450m above sea level. The middle plateau is Malaria free and prophylaxis is highly recommended in low lying and hot areas. The political environment in the country has substantially improved and is now considered to be stable. The currency in use is USD and all basic food and accessories are available. 2 Assignment Title Climate Change Officer Organizational Context & Project Description The national specialist Volunteer will play a supporting role in the UNICEF Programme country office. He/She will support the Senior Environment and Climate Change officer to document, analyse and showcase the climate change consequences for women and children in Zimbabwe. S/he will also support the mainstreaming of environmental sustainablity across UNICEF Programmes and operations while ensuring alignment between UNICEF's Global Climate Change Strategic Framework and the country office programmes. S/he will further assit in managing prorgammes and the implenting partners of these programmes. S/he will support in the policy advocacy work as well as support the development of practices and mechanisms to reduce the office carbon and environmental footprint going forward. Sustainable Development Goals Task description 13. Climate Action Under the direct supervision of Senior Environment and Climate Change Officer, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: Support project(s) management and the implementing partners including monitoring and evaluation; Support mainstreaming of Climate change, Environment and Energy (CEE) in UNICEF country programs throughout the programme management cycle especially in connection with, but not limited to, the thematic approach For Every Child, Sustainable Energy ; Participate in national policy discourse on climate change and environment in order to have the rights of children addressed; Support the incorporation of environmental sustainability management (ESM) in the organization. This shall include although not be limited to efforts to measure, reduce and offset the country office carbon footprint, also known as Greening the blue. As part of the climate change team, advocate for full recognition and inclusion of children s environmental needs in the global policy discourse on climate change and environment; Support the identification of opportunities for children s health and wellbeing to benefit from climate and environment related public and private finance. Furthermore the UN Volunteer will be required to: Strengthen their knowlege and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities for (instance in events that mark IVD); Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in Zimbabwe; Reflect on the type and quality of volunteer action that they are undertaking including participation in ongoing reflection activities; Contribute to articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit then for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc; 27 Mar 2019 Page 2 of 7

3 Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organisations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:- Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day)- Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country- Provide annual and end of assignment reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities using UNV s Volunteer Reporting Application- Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.- Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers- Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible. Results/Expected Outputs - Climate Change, Environment and Energy (CEE) mainstreamed in UNICEF country programs throughout the programme management cycle; - Rights of children addressed in national policy discourse on climate change and environment; - Incorporation of environmental sustainability managament (ESM) and Greening the Blue in the organisation by measuring, reducing and offsetting the country office carbon footprint; - Opportunities for Children's health and well being to benefit from climate and environment related publice and private finance identified; - An end of assignment reporting noting the enhanced maninstreaming of climate change issues across UNICEF programme areas; - Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activitirs throughout the assignment; - UNV's capacity enhanced through coaching, mentoring and formal on-the-job training, when working with (including supervising) national staff or (non) governmental counterparts, including implementing partners (IPs); - A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilised, activities participated in and capacities developed. 4 documented in all activities throughout the assignment A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development dur-ing the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed Qualifications/Requirements Required Degree Level Education - Additional Comments Master degree or equivalent The Volunteer must have a Master's Degree in environmental studies. development studies and/or other related social sciences fields; Required experience Experience Remark 60 months Relevant work experience (Minimum 5 Years) within an institution (academic, government, civil society, research, consultancy) with a focus on Climate Change, resilience, project management, children's enviornmental dneeds and development requirements; Motivated to contribute towards peace and development and to serve others; Good interpersonal, networking and communications skills; Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team; Flexible and open to learning and new experiences; Respect for diversity and adaptability to other cultures, environments and living conditions; Previous experience as a volunteer and or experience of another culture (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded; Computer skills (i.e. Word. Excel, Powerpoint, social media and others). However, there is no expectation of renewal of the assignment. Travel to duty station (if applicable) and a Settling-In-Grant will be provided in the event the duty station is not within commuting distance from the place of recruitment. The applicable Volunteer Living Allowance is provided monthly to cover housing, utilities and normal cost of living expenses. Life, health and permanent disability insurance are included (health insurance for up to 3 dependents), as well as final repatriation (if applicable) and resettlement allowance for satisfactory service. Furthermore, in non-family duty stations that belong to hardship categories D or E, as classified by the ICSC, a Well-Being Differential (WBD) on a monthly basis will be provided. Host entity support to the UN Volunteer includes, but is not limited to: - Introductory briefings about the organisation and office-related context including security, emergency 27 Mar 2019 Page 5 of 7

6 procedures, good cultural practice and orientation to the local environment; - Support with arrival administration including setting-up of bank accounts, residence permit applications and completion of other official processes as required by the host government or host entity; - Structured guidance, mentoring and coaching by a supervisor including a clear workplan and performance appraisal; - Access to office space, equipment, IT support and any other systems and tools required to complete the objectives of the assignment including a host entity address; - Access to shared host entity corporate knowledge, training and learning; - Inclusion of the volunteer in emergency procedures such as evacuations; - Leave management; - DSA for official travel, when applicable; - All changes in the Description of Assignment occurring between recruitment and arrival or during the assignment need to be formalized with the United Nations Volunteer Programme.
