Mentoring for Excellence in Leadership: A System 2

Mentees: How does the program help you? Yes, it was a great program and has helped in my development in my career even though I haven t completed the course. In addition, it has help with me going back to school to get my degree. Yes! I was able to put together a plan of action with the support of my mentor to improve in my three areas of focus and continue to execute on these plans after the program has completed. I really loved the scenarios that were given with my Mentor and the handson approach. I was able to lead my DAC position on a Mission Trip. The Diversity and Inclusion Department made me feel accomplished and excel toward my goals. These rules will apply when I am in a position where I am taken seriously and when I have a team that embraces my talents and my skills. 3

How do your comments help us? You tell us how to make the program work for you: The system requires too many steps to search for and then download and print documents. Just don't have the time but I need to take info with me to read and take notes upon (which you can t do reading it on the computer). Is there a way to make printing materials easier? There has been increased access to structured learning materials. 4

What is Mentoring for Excellence in Leadership? Objective: To grow American s high-potential leaders by providing them with the opportunity to gain exposure and advocacy at a senior level to support their accelerated development and internal mobility. Overview: A 9-month facilitated mentoring experience between American Airlines leaders from across the enterprise. Outcomes: Mentoring allowing mentees to: Expand their network and strengthen cross-business relationships Acquire new perspectives and insights Build leadership skills Augment professional development plans with actions targeted at the capabilities needed to accelerate career progression Learn new perspectives and insights Be exposed to the insights of senior leaders and the exchange of ideas Guidelines: What do I have to do? You will need to commit to working with your mentor/mentee for 9 months, for 30 minutes a month, and to completing the pre- and post-tests, items detailed in monthly agendas, and journals. Time? You will meet with your mentor for a total of 9 months for 30 minutes a month. Work? It s turnkey. Everything you need will be provided to you. You will also be assigned a mentee coach as well as a mentor coach who will ensure you have all materials and are connecting with the system and to each other. This is your personal resource for the program. What is Mentoring for Excellence in Leadership? Mentoring for Excellence in Leadership began with The Donohue Mentoring System (DMS) a one-of-a-kind online leadership-training tool that American has purchased for the last two years for its high-potential leaders. It facilitates monthly meetings between mentors and mentees and uses qualitative and quantitative data to customize the program to the needs of the cohort. This course gives you the tools to relate to the value of mentoring and enjoy the benefits of mentoring without the stress of having to figure out what you are going to do each meeting. Each month it provides you with curriculum readings, notes and an agenda to assist in facilitating your meetings with mentor 5and mentees.

What s in it for you? 6

How do we know people tell us Shared experiences of situations and providing a different way of looking at things. We learn from each other. Being a mentor helps you influence others because you become someone's confidante and they look to you for input and ideas to move forward. 7

How do we know people tell us Mentoring has given me the confidence to truly seek happiness within my own work environment. That finding that balance between work and parenthood is possible. I think my influence would be that others get to see someone like me make great progress while moving forward and upward. At least that's the plan Mentoring creates a connection with the mentee and helps understand the listening/ talking style for communication. This strengthens the team. Therefore, it is important for a manager to mentor his/her team regularly to be able to adapt to individual listening styles. 8

Why put in the time? Mentoring is the best training for leaders. Mentoring is connecting and building your cultural capital. Our research demonstrates that people are no longer motivated by star leaders; rather, they are motivated by a desire to be on star teams.

The drive to connect at work with others ranks among our primary need as humans. HBR, July August 2012

Mentoring for Excellence in Leadership Our model is based on this need to connect 14

Mentoring creates a great experience 16

Benefits of the program YOU, your growth, and your team s growth It s all about happiness 17

Dr. Mary s Top Five Tips #1 Mentors Build Team: A committed mentor is willing to teach what she knows, share what she has and never takes the relationship lightly. She understands that effective mentoring requires time and commitment, and is willing to continually share information and her ongoing support with the mentee. When she does this, our research has proven that people who receive mentorship are 72% more likely to move forward in the organization. Mentoring is not just about teaching others, it s sharing ideas and past learning experiences. It is important that people know that you can learn so much from sharing ideas and past experiences and grow by doing this. Mentoring is like a flower blooming, you come out of your bud, show your beauty and share your knowledge by inviting others in (the bees). 18

Dr. Mary s Top Five Tips #2 Mentors Create Value: Excellent communication builds trust and value in leadership. A good mentor is committed to helping their team members find success and gratification in their chosen profession and future with AA. A mentor who is building value empowers their mentee to develop their own strengths, beliefs and personal attributes. Our work with the Fortune Top 100 has demonstrated that trust in leadership increases 9% in as few as four months when this behavior pattern is consistently modeled. My mentor helped me to influence others by giving me advice on looking at the bigger picture. 19

Dr. Mary s Top Five Tips #3 Mentors Create a Great Experience Good mentors are like a great fitness trainer. The mentor encourages the mentee to take control of their career by getting in shape and hitting their goals, but they don t actually do the heavy lifting for their mentee. The mentor shows the mentee how to get the job done, be it navigating difficult political situations or achieving new heights. When people lead and behave by their code of ethics, teams work together better. The above statement is very accurate. Over the years as a leader, I have always looked up to the leaders that seemed to carry themselves with a tremendous code of ethics. This not only applies to work but also your everyday living from raising your children to marriage and sporting activities 20

Dr. Mary s Top Five Tips #4 Mentors Demonstrate How to Give and Receive Feedback Mentors, at your level, are in a position to demonstrate how the airline is growing and changing, and to harness the energy that evolving creates by giving your team new and interesting opportunities to learn. However, one of the key responsibilities of a leader is to provide constant feedback and in turn act on feedback they receive from their followers. As a mentor, you both model and teach this, and when it is done effectively productivity increases on average 34%. Mentoring allows me to listen and reflect back to the mentee. Together we can reshape his/her thinking on goals and how to achieve them. 21

Dr. Mary s Top Five Tips #5 Mentors Guide and Provide Structure for Difficult Conversations One of the key responsibilities of a good mentor is to provide guidance and constructive feedback to their mentee. This is where the mentee will most likely grow the most by identifying their strengths and optimally using them, and by turning weaknesses into strengths. A good mentor possesses excellent communication skills and is able to adjust their communication style to the personality of the mentee. A good mentor will also provide the mentee with challenges that will foster professional development and a feeling of accomplishment in learning the field. When people lead and behave by their code of ethics, teams work together better. The above statement is very accurate. Over the years as a leader, I have always looked up to the leaders that seemed to carry themselves with a tremendous code of ethics. This not only applies to work but also your everyday living from raising your children to marriage and sporting activities. 22

The Value of Happiness In a 2016 study and other current research, we learned that a program that is structured to and measured by connecting people with one another, you increase happiness at work and at home. Once that happens, you have loyal employees who enjoy work. 23
